Although it regards human existence as unexplainable, Waiting for Godot is primarily about hope. The play revolves around Vladimir and Estragon and their pitiful wait for hope to arrive. At various times during the play, hope is constructed as a form of healing. The subject of the play quickly becomes an example of how to pass the time in a situation, which offers no hope.

Two men, Vladimir and Estragon, meet near a tree. They converse on various topics and reveal that they are waiting there for a man named Godot. While they wait, two other men enter. Pozzo is on his way to the market to sell his slave, Lucky. He pauses for a while to converse with Vladimir and Estragon. Lucky entertains them by dancing and thinking, and Pozzo and Lucky leave.

After Pozzo and Lucky leave, a boy enters and tells Vladimir that he is a messenger from Godot. He tells Vladimir that Godot will not be coming tonight, but that he will surely come tomorrow. Vladimir asks him some questions about Godot and the boy departs. After his departure, Vladimir and Estragon decide to leave.

The next night, Vladimir and Estragon again meet near the tree to wait for Godot. Lucky and Pozzo enter again, but this time Pozzo is blind and Lucky is dumb. Pozzo does not remember meeting the two men the night before. They leave and Vladimir and Estragon continue to wait.

Shortly after, the boy enters and once again tells Vladimir that Godot will not be coming. He insists that he did not speak to Vladimir yesterday. After he leaves, Estragon and Vladimir decide to leave, but they do not move as the curtain falls, ending the play.

The play, Waiting For Godot is centered around Estragon and Vladimir, who are waiting for Mr. Godot. They know little about him. Estragon admits himself that he may never recognize Mr. Godot, Personally I wouldnt know him if I ever saw him. (p.). Estragon also remarks, … we hardly know him. (P.), which illustrates to an audience that the identity of Mr. Godot is irrelevant, as little information is ever given throughout the play about this hard to define mystery man. A very important element of the play is the act of waiting for someone or something that never arrives. We find it natural to speculate on the identity of Godot because of our excessive need to find answers to questions.

There are many interpretations for the characters of Becketts play. The two men, Estragon and Vladimir may be everyman and his conscience. Estragon is less confident and at one moment is ready to hang himself. Vladimir is more hopeful, and more even in temperament. Pozzo seems to be the evil master. However he could be Godot, or an evil living form of Godot. The most obvious interpretation of Godot is that he is God.

This is, quite obviously, a story that is almost completely metaphorical. The plot and the characters are meaningless; it is only in what they represent that we find meaning. Estragon and Vladimir represent all of humanity. They cannot stand to be together, and yet cannot bear to be apart. There is no logic, or any reason for any of the things they do. They are comic figures, and yet once in a while they will utter something thoughtful. They are treated cruelly by others, and treat others cruelly. And yet, they are basically good. They await the coming of Godot. Godot is God. He promises to come back each day, however he fails in his promises, and the world goes on.

The theme of Godot is as follows; humanity needs to stop waiting for God to manifest himself and must stop trying to discover the meaning of life. The truth, that life is meaningless, is too hard for us to deal with. Therefore, we believe in our own Godot, who will someday save us. So why should we even live? Why not hang ourselves like Vladimir and Estragon thought of doing? We stay alive because life is meaningful. But we make the meaning. Once we stop waiting for a grand meaning to manifest itself, and start living life, the meaning of life will become apparent. The Irish critic Vivian Mercier said it best when he called Waiting for Godot a play in which nothing happens, twice.
