Utopia is based on the interaction between three men, Thomas More, Peter Giles, and Raphael Hythloday. These three men are intellectuals and the book occurs during their conversation of the travels of Hythloday. Hythloday is a philosopher and world traveler and ends up relating a perfect society he visited, the island of Utopia. More uses this society as a model for European society as well as a critic of European life. In Utopia, More deals with the contrast between an idealistic and practical world through creating what seems to be a perfect society, or a utopia. The ideas More puts forth in Utopia are intriguing and appear to be the ideal of every society. Yet, the book in no place provides means to changing a society to fit this utopia. More acknowledges that many of the policies put in place in utopia only work their because the society has been born out of them, and to other foreign societies, these same policies would fail. Is More suggesting this society can never existing in a pre-existing society? Probably. Since we now live in a cynical and generally untrusting world, it seems appalling to us that houses would not have locks, people would not have private space, and no one would own land. While More maybe showing his reader the ideal society, he also succeeds in showing the reader how dramatically far away modern society is from acquiring “utopia”. Due to the ambiguity of Utopia (the reader never knows to side with pragmatism of idealism when looking at society) perhaps the novel is best served as a device for judging our own societies strengths and weaknesses.
