¡§The control of an organisation¡¦s employees by managerial attempts to follow a behavioural methodology is doomed to failure in every instance¡¨.

I am to discuss the statement above and decide whether to agree or not to agree, throughout this paper I shall discuss the reasons behind my answer.

The manager¡¦s role in an organisation is to stimulate the workers and bring a response out of the workers that will get the plans and tasks completed. As all workers are different the stimulus required will be different. The manager has to know how to get the best from individuals. There are a number of theories that the manager can undertake.

I do not agree with the statement above, as there are a number of methods that can be used to control employees and get the best out of them. I may not agree with all the theories but they all have good points and bad points, managers should be using bits of all the theories.

Maslow¡¦s Hierarchy of needs

1. The physiological needs. These include the needs we have for oxygen, water, vitamins and minerals. Also, there are the needs to be active, to rest, to sleep, to get rid of wastes (CO, sweat, urine, and feces), to avoid pain, and to have sex. Maslow believed, and research supports him, that these are in fact individual needs, and that a lack of, say, vitamin C, will lead to a very specific hunger for things which have in the past provided that vitamin C e.g. orange juice.

. The safety and security needs. Once the physiological needs are largely taken care of, this second layer needs to be taken care of. People will become increasingly interested in finding safe circumstances, stability, and protection. A need for structure, for order, some rules or regulations may start to develop. People become concerned, not with needs like hunger and thirst, but with their fears and anxieties. In the ordinary adult, this set of needs manifest themselves in the form of our urges to have a nice home, a car, job security, a good retirement plan, and so on.

. The love and belonging needs. When physiological needs and safety needs are, by and large, taken care of, we have to deal with the third layer. People begin to feel the need for friends, a partner, children, affectionate relationships in general, even a sense of community. Looked at negatively, people become increasing susceptible to loneliness and social anxieties. In our day-to-day life, we exhibit these needs in our desires to marry, have a family, be a part of a community, a part of a gang or a football club. It is also a part of what we look for in a career.

4. The esteem needs. Next, we begin to look for a little self-esteem. Maslow noted two versions of esteem needs, a lower one and a higher one. The lower one is the need for the respect of others, the need for status, fame, glory, recognition, attention, reputation, appreciation, dignity, and even dominance. The higher form involves the need for self-respect, including such feelings as confidence, competence, achievement, independence, and freedom. Note that this is the ¡§higher¡¨ form because, unlike the respect of others, once you have self-respect, it¡¦s a lot harder to lose.

5. Self-actualisation. The need for self-actualisation is the desire to become more and more what one is, to become everything that one is capable of becoming. People who have everything can maximize their potential.

Myself I believe that Maslow has the right idea when it comes to motivating people, if a manager was to implement Maslow¡¦s theory then his workforce would be much happier and therefore far more productive. This means that the statement in question cannot be true as Maslow¡¦s theory is not doomed to failure in my opinion. However it may not suit all workers.

Douglas McGregor -Theory X and Theory Y

Douglas McGregor in his book, The Human Side of Enterprise published in 160 has examined theories on behaviour of individuals at work, and he has formulated two models, which he calls Theory X and Theory Y.

Theory X

1. The average human being has an inherent dislike of work and will avoid it if he can.

. Because of their dislike for work, most people must be controlled and threatened before they will work hard enough.

. The average human prefers to be directed, dislikes responsibility, is unambiguous, and desires security above everything.

4. These assumptions lie behind most organizational principles today, and give rise both to tough management with punishments and tight controls, and soft management, which aims at harmony at work.

5. Both these are wrong because man needs more than financial rewards at work; he also needs some deeper higher order motivation - the opportunity to fulfil himself.

6. Theory X managers do not give their staff this opportunity so that the employees behave in the expected fashion.

Theory Y

1. The expenditure of physical and mental effort in work is as natural as play or rest.

. Control and punishment are not the only ways to make people work, man will direct himself if he is committed to the aims of the organization.

. If a job is satisfying, then the result will be commitment to the organization.

4. The average man learns, under proper conditions, not only to accept but to seek responsibility.

5. Imagination, creativity, and ingenuity can be used to solve work problems by a large number of employees.

6. Under the conditions of modern industrial life, the intellectual potentialities of the average man are only partially utilized.

7. Staff will contribute more to the organization if they are treated as responsible and valued employees.

Personally I think that Theory X is how a lot of people think when it comes to their job. I would say that Theory X could be used on low-skill jobs such as factory work, the reason I say this is because a job like that does not bring satisfaction due to repetition. Theory Y is would be best used on managers as they are usually far more committed to the company than shop floor workers.

Frederick Herzberg - Factor Hygiene and Motivation Theory

The first part of the motivation theory involves the hygiene theory and includes the job environment. The hygiene factors include

„X The company policies and its administration

„X The kind of supervision which people receive while on the job

„X Working conditions

„X Interpersonal relations

„X Salary

„X Status

„X Security

These factors do not lead to higher levels of motivation but without them there is dissatisfaction. The second part of Herzbergs motivation theory involves what people actually do on the job. The motivators are

„X Achievement,

„X Recognition,

„X Promotion and interest in the job.

Both these approaches must be done simultaneously. Treat workers as best you can so they have no dissatisfaction. Use people so they get achievement, recognition for achievement, interest, and responsibility and they can grow and advance in their work.

I believe that Herzberg has the right idea, people have to first be happy and then you can build on that. A happy workforce will produce far more than an unhappy or unrecognised workforce. People need to know that they are important, it is up to the management to show their workers that they are an important part of the organisation. Managers should ask its employees how they think their jobs could be improved. This will make employees feel wanted and that their views count for something. I feel that if employees are happy with the workplace (cantine, etc) then you will reduce absenteeism and it will boost morale around the workplace.

Rensis Likert - Management Systems and Styles

Dr. Rensis Likert has conducted much research on human behaviour within organizations. He has examined different types of organizations and leadership styles, and he believes that to achieve maximum profitability, good labour relations and high productivity, every organization must make optimum use of their human resources.

The form of the organisation, which will make greatest use of the human capacity, Likert contends, is;

¡§Highly effective work groups linked together in an overlapping pattern by other similarly effective groups.¡¨

Organisations at present have widely varying types of management style and

Likert has identified four main systems

The exploitive - authoritative system, where decisions are imposed on people, where motivation is characterised by threats, where high levels of management have great responsibilities but lower levels have virtually none, where there is very little communication and no teamwork.

The benevolent - authoritative system, where leadership is by a condescending form of master-servant trust, where motivation is mainly by rewards, where management feel responsibility but lower levels do not, where there is little communication and relatively little teamwork.

The consultative system, where leadership is by superiors who have substantial but not complete trust in their employees, where motivation is by rewards and some involvement, where a high proportion of personnel, especially those at the higher levels feel responsibility for achieving organisation goals, where there is some communication (both vertical and horizontal) and a moderate amount of teamwork.

The participative - group system, which is the best solution, where leadership is by superiors who have; complete confidence in their employees, where motivation is by economic rewards based on goals which have been set in participation, where personnel at all levels feel real responsibility for the organisations goals, where there is much communication, and a large amount of cooperative teamwork.

The participative solution is the best out of the four solutions because it has all employees involved as much as possible with increased communication between management and lower employees. This can give management a better idea of what employees want and how they are best motivated.

Control

It is important that managers have control of the workforce. Managers must be seen, as inspiring and motivating this will gain respect from workers, without respect the managers will not have control. In smaller organisations personal relationships can be built between staff. These relationships must be controlled in the workplace with professional relationships remaining. If managers cannot control their feelings in the workplace then they will lose the respect and control they previously had.

Evaluation

From the research I have conducted I disagree with the statement in question and I believe that behavioural methodology can work if the correct methods are carried out on the appropriate people. I have also taken into account my own experiences and how I am motivated. I believe that if management were to combine Rensis Linkert¡¦s participative group system, with Frederik Herzberg¡¦s Hygiene and Motivation theory, Douglas McGregor¡¦s theory X and Maslows Hierarchy of needs. They would have the aspects that affect everybody in the workplace whether they are management or machinist. I also strongly believe that a high percentage of people are largely motivated by money and a standard of life.

The statement ¡§The control of an organisation¡¦s employees by managerial attempts to follow a behavioural methodology is doomed to failure in every instance¡¨ is a very broad statement because there are so many possible scenarios and there are many behavioural methodologies of which I have mentioned a few. Managers who use behavioural methodology have been successful in the past and I believe that they will continue to do so for a long time. But managers must remember that everyone is different and with communication a happier more productive workforce can be achieved.

The Kiss; Auguste Rodin; IMPRESSIONISM; France; featured in ARTFORMS

The Kiss; Constanine Brancusi; ABSTRACTION; France; featured in ARTFORMS

When comparing the two sculptures titled The Kiss, there are many differences. Though both portray an intimate embrace, Rodins’ sculpture portrays a moment of intense passion, as though to show the exact moment two people become overcome with emotion. The couple are just beginning to embrace, are barely touching each other. They are shown in intense detail, each obviously their ‘own person’. But Brancusis’ sculpture shows a more total and deep embrace. Perhaps the way two people would hold each other that had been together for a long time, shared may hardships and joys. They are holding each other as tightly and completely as any couple could, their bodies touching so closely it’s hard to distinguish where one ends and another begins.

livepaperhelp.com

At first glance, many differences in the two sculptures appear, but at closer inspection, they also have so many similarities. They were both created by French artists to portray an idea of love and passion, and within just a few short years of one another. The sculptures both share the same name as well. Both are statues made of stone, though different kinds of were used. Both portray a man and a woman voluntarily embracing, sharing a kiss. Rodins’ statue shows so much detail, and Brancusis’ shows so little, yet you get much the same emotion from them both.

A kiss.. love.. passion.... Though the same words, they can carry so many different ideas and meanings to so many different people.

The music video industry represents females in a disrespectful and unfair manner. They show them half naked and emphasize slim, often unhealthy bodies on women while men can get away with any body type or hide it under baggy, long-sleeved clothes. Women are depicted as objects which can be replaced and whose sole purpose is to please men. They are shown as brainless, but entertaining and therefore having a purpose. One cause may be that most music video directors are male; however each and every woman who is unopinionated on the matter or just passively accepts the women’s music videos contributes to the continuation of this kind of gender prejudice. Sadly, the majority of women fall into this group causing the discrimination and flesh fest to continue to worsen. It will continue to deteriorate since there is no opposition even in this society that takes great pride in having equal rights but is blatantly ignorant with regard to the music video industry. Osmosis

In my experiment, I plan to find out whether the concentration of sugar in water affects how much water will go in to a potato chip. I will do this by having twelve test tubes three with one molar of sugar solution, three with ½ molar sugar solution, three with ¼ molar sugar solution and three with zero molar sugar solution. I will do three of each so I can take an average from the results. Prediction For the investigation I think that the lower the concentration of sugar in the test tube the larger mass the potato chip will be.

I think this because I know that Osmosis is the movement of water molecules across a partially permeable membrane from an area of high water concentration to an area of low water concentration. Therefore the water molecules pass from a high concentration (in the water itself) to a low concentration (in the potato chip). Therefore, the chips in higher water concentrations will have a larger mass than in higher sugar concentrations. Diagram For Prediction This is a diagram for what I predict will happen in the experiment. If the potato is in one Molar solution then the increase in mass due to osmosis will be little, as there is more sugar than water in the solution. If it is in 0.5 Molar solution, it should increase a little. If it is in pure water then the increase will be quite a lot, as there are many water molecules in water, therefore due to osmosis its mass will increase more that the other two experiments. Fair Test In the investigation, I will make it a fair test by keeping the following things the same 1. Volume of solution 0ml . Same size boiling tube . Same type of potato 4. Temperature Room Temperature 5. Same sugar solution 6. Same size potato borer 7. Time left for 48hrs 8. Size of potato chip 0mm For all of these criteria, having them not uniform in all of the tests would mean it would not be a fair test. For instance if I had a longer potato the surface area would be bigger and there would be more space for osmosis to occur. Apparatus To do this test I will need 1. Twelve test tubes . Sugar solution . Water 4.

Twelve potato chips 5. Size 5 borer 6. Ruler 7. Two test tube racks 8. A Knife

livepaperhelp.com

Diagram These are diagrams of how the apparatus is used. This first one is about boring the holes in the potato This one is the potato chip in the water solution. Method 1. Take about two or three potatoes and bore twelve potato cylinders out of them using borer size 5. . Cut the potato cylinders to 0mm, then set aside. . Collect twelve test tubes and put in test tube racks. 4.

Measure 0, 10 and 15ml of water three times ( x 0, x 10 and x 15ml water) then 5. Measure 0, 10 and 5ml of sugar solution three times ( x 0 x 10 and

x 5ml sugar solution) 6. Mix these in this order, 0ml water in three test tubes. Three test tubes of 10ml water + 10ml sugar solution. Three test tubes of

15ml water and 5ml sugar solution. Finally three test tubes of 0ml sugar solution. 7. Attempt to put all potato chips in at the same time. 8. Leave for

48hrs. . Come back in 48hrs time and take all the potato chips out of the test tubes. 10. Roll them carefully on paper towels or other absorbent material to remove excess water. 11. Weigh each chip individually and record the measurement. Results Molar Mass at start Mass at finish Difference Increase in %

1.00 1.68 1. -0.46 -7.8 0.50 1.68 1.6 -0. -1.05 0.00 1.68 .0 0.5

0.5 1.00 1.68 1. -0.46 -7.8 0.50 1.68 1.8 -0.0 -17.86 0.00 1.68 1.5

0.7 16.07 1.00 1.68 1.1 -0.47 -7.8 0.50 1.68 1. -0.5 -0.8 0.00 1.68

1.0 0. 1.10 Graphs See attached sheets. Conclusion My results show that the mass of the potato in the experiment with one molar of sugar solution decreased by about -7.68 % which means Osmosis must have occurred because the water leaving the potato’s cells into the sugar solution decreased the mass as the sugar molecules can’t get into the potato as its molecules are too big. The potato that was in 0.5 molar sugar solution decreased in mass by -1.5%.

Looking at the graphs you will notice that the graphs show a positive correlation. My results agree with my prediction in the sense that they are showing the same thing that I had predicted. Which was, that the potato chip would increase in mass when it was put into pure water and would decrease in mass when put into pure sugar solution. Evaluation The method I used was reliable. There were not any anomalous results; this can be seen on the graph as all the points on the graph correlate well. If I could do this investigation again, I would have repeated the investigation five times because if you do an experiment more times you get a better average. I could have investigated a wider range of variables (i.e. 1, ½, ¼, 1/8, 1/16, 1/) this would show better the relationship between sugar solution concentration and the amount of osmosis occurring.

Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, better known as Sandro Botticelli, was a famous painter

of the Florentine Renaissance. Botticelli was born in Florence, Italy in the year 1445. to a

tanner. His nickname Botticelli was derived from Botticello, which means ?little barrel?, it has

been said that the nickname was also his older brothers and was passed down to him at some

time.

Botticelli began as an apprentice under a local goldsmith, next he served an

apprenticeship under Fra Filippo Lippi, a painter. He later worked with the painter and engraver

Antonio del Pollaiuolo from whom his sense of line derived another one of Botticelli?s influences was Andrea del Verrocchio.

In 1470, by the age twenty-five, Botticelli had his own workshop. Many of his patrons were some of the greatest families in Florence. Above all most of his work was done for the Medici family. Being in the court of Lorenzo de Medici, Botticelli was greatly influenced by the Christian Neoplatonism, which was a form of art that tried to reconcile classical and Christian views.

From 1481 to 148 Botticelli was commissioned to join Perugino, Ghirlandaio, and Rosselli in Rome to paint frescoes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel. On the walls he painted The Youth of Moses, the Punishment of the Sons of Corah, and the Temptation of Christ.

In the 140?s the Medici?s were expelled form Florence and the monk Girolanmo Savonarola preached reform and austerity, it was at this time Botticelli began to go through a religious crisis. His works such as the Mystic Nativity, and Mystic Crucifixion reflected an intense religious devotion.

Sandro Botticelli did not paint in the latter years of his life. His last six years of life are unaccounted for, there have been no paintings found form that time of his life. Botticelli died in May of 1510.

Being of the Florentine Renaissance Botticelli?s works were mostly based on mythological and Christian characters. In almost all of Botticelli?s paintings tempera was used to paint, either on canvas or panel. For non-religious paintings that would be found in the church or in the court.

Botticelli was interested in dynamics, and he introduced movement as a means of creating flowing linear compositions or as an expression of narrative content, but never in the interest of depicting the muscularity of the human body in action. In all of his paintings you may view his use of the flowing line; all of Botticelli?s figures are incapable of ever being entirely static.

Two of his most famous paintings were the Birth of Venus (circa 148), and the Primavera (circa 1478). Both of these were paintings representing mythological happenings.

The Birth of Venus was painted for the villa of Lorenzo di Pier Francesco de Medici at Castello. This painting represented a classical myth instead of a Christian legend. At the time of the Renaissance the Italians were in deep admiration of the Greek and Roman views of mythology. They were so convinced of the superior wisdom of the ancients that they believed these classical legends must contain some profound and mysterious truth.

Taking a deeper look at the painting of the Birth of Venus we break up the painting into four different parts. The ?west wind?, located in the upper-left corner, Zephyr and Chloris fly with limbs entwined as a twofold entity. Zephyr is vigorously puffing while Chloris gently sighs the warm breath that sends Venus ashore. All around them are falling roses. Each with a golden heart, which according to legend came into being at Venus? birth. The ?wooded shore?, located in the upper-right, are trees that form parts of a flowering orange grove. Each small white blossom of the orange trees is tipped with gold, as gold is used throughout the painting portraying its role as the divine status of Venus. The ?Nymph?, located to the right of Venus, may be on of ?The Hours?, who were attendants to Venus. Both the Nymph?s dress and Venus? robe are decorated in spring flowers, appropriated to the theme of birth. She wears a garland of myrtle, the tree of Venus, and a sash of pink roses, as worn by the goddess Flora in Botticelli?s Primavera. Venus, located in the center, is standing on a scallop shell about to take her first step onto the shore. Here what we see is not actually her birth out of the waves, but the moment when, having been conveyed by the shell, she lands at Paphos in Cyprus.

In 1478 Lorenzo di Pier Francesco de Medici had Botticelli painted the Primavera for his country home. For the same reasons as the Birth of Venus this mythological happening was painted.

At the right Zephyr, the warm wind of Spring, embraces the Roman goddess Flora, or perhaps the earth nymph Chloris, as she is trying to run form his clasp. She is shown at the moment of her metamorphosis into Flora, as her breath turns to flowers which take root over the countryside. Across from her, we see Flora as a goddess, in all her glory as she steps forward covered in blossoms. In the center is a gentle Venus, all dignified with the promise of spiritual joy, and above her, the infant Cupid aims his loving arrows. To the left, the Three Graces dance gracefully in silence, removed from the others in time, as indicated by the breeze that blows their hair and clothes in the opposite direction from Zephyr?s guest. To the left of the Graces, Mercury turns as if to indicate the passage of spring towards summer.

I chose to write on Sandro Botticelli for a few reasons. First just the utter beauty of the painting it?s breathtaking approach to the male and female roles in mythology. Next for all the flowers in the painting, I love roses. Botticelli dose not paint flowers like a lot of artist. He has them floating around Venus in mid air. Without water, vases, but they are still as fresh as the day they would have been cut, but where painted. The final reason would be for the differences in how he paints the male and female images. Venus so pure and innocent, naked but covered. And the male so powerful you can actually see his breath, (making the seasons change). I guess like the era the painting was painted in with the manly king and the beautiful queen.

In doing my research I found the Primavera, which like the Birth of Venus had a lot of different dimensions to look at. It also had a lot of different analytical views as to what each character was doing, which made my research more interesting to me.

The James Bond films are a cinematic phenomenon. They were born at a precise moment in British history, a period when a lot of social and cultural changes were taking place. The 160’s witnessed sexual liberation and the transformation of the United Kingdom from sober and sophisticated to swinging symbol of fashion, music, youth and consumerism. And the Bond films portray all the changes that were taking place during the 160’s. In this paper I will be analyzing the Bond musical theme and the music for the latest installment Die Another Day.

James Bond was born early in the 144, when Ian Fleming spent some weeks in Jamaica, where in his beach house he began a routine that was to continue until the end of his life time and which produced thirteen James Bond thrillers. Fleming started his first novel during the year 15. He took the name of his main character from the author of a book called Bird of the West Indies by an ornithologist James Bond.

It was in Casino Royale, not Dr, No, that James Bond made his first screen appearance. The first time Bond appeared on American television was on October 1st 154. Casino Royale was the third episode in CBS’s Climax Mystery Theater. It was filmed mainly on a casino set built at the Television City in Hollywood; Casino Royale lacked all the adventure and dazzling locations associated with 007. Musically the TV series was not very impressive. From a musical standpoint, Bond wasnt born until 16, at the opening of Dr. No, when Monty Normans now-legendary James Bond Theme played under a series of moving, flashing, and colorful dots.

The James Bond films are films of a unique and special kind. Genre movies are those commercial feature films which, through repletion and variation, tell familiar stories with familiar characters in familiar situations. They also encourage expectations and experiences similar to those of similar films we have already seen. The Bond films are genre films in that they exhibit a basic formula which remains remarkably consistent throughout the series. Audiences have become familiar with the stories, character types and narrative situations of the films. As one critic remarked at the opening of the Bond film, GoldenEye ‘We want to like most movies we pay to see but we already know the Bond formula it has already earned our good will so our pleasure revolves around seeing how the film-maker executes their turn.’

It is evident, even within these brief schemata, that the Bond series marks the convergence of a number of different generic forms and traditions. The Bond films are unique in so far as there is no comparable group of films which can be located at precisely the same point of convergence between genres. The generic traditions which come together in Bond series encompass different national cinemas, which not only adds to their uniqueness but also goes some way towards explaining their world wide popularity.

For all the similarities which Bond films share with other genres, the Bond films series is differentiated from other action movies through the character of James Bond himself. ‘There is no romantic anti- hero in existence at the moment,’ remarked GoldenEye director Martin Campbell in 15. ‘They are all blue collar Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Sylvester Stallone. There are no sophisticated or British comparisons to Bond. The Bond film-makers have developed their know ideology based on the notion of what is and isn’t ‘Bondian.’ This ideology constitutes a set of expectations about what a Bond movie should be like, what it should contain. As the result the James Bond theme had to portray the image as per the ideology.

From my point of view, Monty Norman has been successful in doing so. The theme portrays more than an action hero; the use of brass instruments like saxophone gives a romantic impression about James Bond’s character there are also guitars and drums. The melody also portrays James Bond as a spy and an action hero. The theme starts with a fast tempo, it is in the key of E minor and the meter is in groups of 4 and it is usually subordinate to the visual.

JAMES BOND THEME

BY

MONTY NORMAN

On some occasions the theme is played in different keys. The original theme is played during what I like to call “the Bond move.” On most occasions James Bond, no way to escape inevitable death, uses his gadgets to set himself free or/and fight the an entire army of the bad guy by himself. James Bond’s action the action is very well synchronized in GoldenEye, during one of the fight sequence the Bond Girl Natalya Simonova (played by Izabella Scorupco) is captured by the Russians. She was being taken to the “bad guy” through the streets of Moscow and there is silence for few seconds and suddenly James Bond breaks through a concrete wall in an army tank and music is accompanied with the sequence. The music is synchronized with the visual. There are other instances when the theme is played, for example, when James Bond is actually doing some spy work. In such scenes the music usually has very low dynamics and a slow tempo to help the audience to engage with the film. The theme is also used for structural unity, for instance when there is a change of scene and theme also helps in the continuity of the narrative contained.

However, as the Bond films gained popularity, so did the musical theme; the theme is perhaps the more recognizable in the Bond films. It instantly calls to mind not just a character but an entire world of girls, gadgets, guns, thrills, double entendres and more. Today, with 0 official movies (Die Another Day is the latest Bond film) the James Bond films are one of the most successful films of its kind. Some of the films have been dark, serious spy stories, others silly self-parodies, but theres always the style, the fun and the music that has for three generations (and counting) defined the worlds sexiest, suavest, coolest secret agent.

Besides the James Bond theme being an integral part of the Bondian ideology the title song is also an essential part of the film. The title songs have played any equally important role as has the James Bond musical theme. Not only do they bring a musical voice to the films, they also provided a marketable hook. The title songs are always accompanied by erotic videos of women which also include James Bond and most of the times the videos rarely make any sense; they are usually random sequence of video. The title songs are usually sung by some high profile artist, for instance the latest Bond film’s Die Another Day’s title song called Die Another Day is sung by Madonna. The video also utilizes state of the art visual graphics. So it is a mix of everything from special visual effect to erotic women, which summarizes Bond films in a nutshell. The music for the songs is also one of a kind. It does not fall into a specific genre, like the films, the music seem to be a genre by itself. The song reflects her ever-changing musical repertoire with the emphasis on techno beat, electronic backing and vocals. It also reflects the increasing technological gadgets in Bond films and, notably, Qs legacy (the gadget master). The Title song at best can be categorized as techno. However, I am a bit hasty in doing so. The music for the song doesn’t have a distinct melody and music is a little chaotic and there are very few musical instruments, most of the music is electronic. Madonna’s voice has also been electronically altered; all in all it is a typical Bond title song.

The music for Die Another Day along with Madonna was provided by Mirwais Ahmadzaï(title music), David Arnold, and Monty Norman (James Bond theme). This movie unlike its predecessors has a lot of music. The movie uses a lot of non-diegetic music to help the narrative content. The musical themes that I have identified are the Bond theme, the “evil” theme, the action sequence theme, and a leitmotiv for the Bond girl Giacinta Jinx Jordan played by Halle Berry and they have also include a Cuban musical score and also have parts of song called London calling by the group Clash.

Traditionally, the Bond Theme is saved for those signature moments in the action when our hero kicks it up a notch. The thrill of suddenly hearing the theme adds to the thrill of the moment; it puts the audience in the car, on the cliff, hanging with 007. Its sort of the ultimate cool bit. But here, the theme is used so much that it actually loses its novelty, and thus its power. It becomes, simply, music -- and really, what good is that? The Bond Theme is more than just music; its the soul of the man and the soul of the film.

In the movie when James Bond arrives at Cuba, Cuban music is played in the background to add to the visual content. As the scene in Cuba goes on, the audience can hear a variation of the Bond theme mixed with the Cuban music. From my point of view, I think, the merger is inappropriate as Bond was not engaged in any of his signature moves; he was on his way to meet one of his acquaintances in Cuba. After completing the field work in Cuba, James Bond goes to London, England. As he is on his way, during the flight audience can hear the song London Calling, as mention above is a song by Clash, which is a rock and roll band from England during the 170’s and the 180’s. The song was release in 17 and was a very popular song in those days. David Arnold used the song to portray London and helps in the continuation of the narrative content. As Michel Chion pointed out, “film sound is considered as a “plus,” an added value.” Arnold has used a lot of non-diegetic music in the film; however, he didn’t have leitmotivs from all the character. Halle Berry the CIA agent has a leitmotiv, which is played quite a few times during the movie, for instance, her leitmotiv is played when James Bond was looking for her and finds a hook she used to sneak into Gustav Graves (the bad guy) living quarters. This non-diegetic music helps the audience to follow the storyline and helps the audience understand what Bond is doing.

Before I talk about the leitmotiv for the bad guy, it will be helpful to know about his character. The bad guy is a North Korean Colonel called Moon. In the opening sequence of the film Bond throws him of a cliff and later on he reappears in the movie as Gustav Graves. He not only had changed his identity but also had changed his face via gene therapy. However James Bond, until later on, doesn’t know that Colonel Moon had changed his identity to Gustav Graves. As for the leitmotiv, the audience can recognize Gustav Graves as Colonel Moon when he makes his appearance in the movie because his entry is accompanied by the “evil” leitmotiv. Compared to the Bond Theme, the “evil” leitmotiv is played on a lower key, slow tempo and on some occasion has high dynamics. Arnold has also used this theme on numerous occasions and sometimes combined it with the Bond theme.

A variation of the “evil” leitmotiv combined with the James Bond’s and Jinx’s theme is played when Bond and Jinx are engaged in a fight with Zao (Graves’ subordinate). This is the only scene when the “evil” leitmotiv is played without Graves in the sequence. I think it was not a smart move on Arnold’s part to include Graves’ leitmotiv in this particular scene. However, in the rest of the movie Arnold has used a mixture and variation of both the Bond theme and the “evil” leitmotiv to portray all the fight sequence. Most of the fight sequence start with the/variation of the “evil” leitmotiv and ends with the/variation of the James Bond theme.

The other character like M, Q, Moneypenny and rest of the members of MI6 (British intelligence headquarters) don’t have any musical theme. It is consistent with other Bond films, it was a common phenomena. It seemed that it was a part of the Bondian ideology. The older Bond movies followed the same pattern, the Bond girl always had a leitmotiv and so did Bond’s nemesis. But the MI6 officials didn’t have a musical theme. Maybe film-makers didn’t think it was important for them to have one as they usually appear in the movie for a very short time. I also think if someone like M (chief of MI6) had a musical theme, it might affect Bond’s image negative. The musical theme might make the audience think that M or anyone in MI6 for that matter has some important role in the defeating the bad guy. But the truth is most of the times James Bond alone with his gadgets defeats the bad guy.

Bond Music from the first strains of the Bond Theme in 16 to the somewhat strained overuse of it in 00, the music has defined not just 007, but a whole generation. It also defines, quite clearly, what movies of Bond’s caliber should sound like. Over the few decades the musical theme has changed, which can be attributed to the improvement to the sound engineering. But mostly the theme has remained same. Overall, from a musical standpoint, Die Another Day is not very different from its predecessors; the major difference is that the music for the movie has evolved with time. The James Bond theme has become more like dance music. And Monty Norman should be credited for creating such a memorable musical theme.

Remembering September 11

September 11 was not just any ordinary day. Our country’s freedom was taken away. That day we were in shock, disbelief and petrified of what may come. Americans feared for their lives and lived each day to the fullest. It brought people closer to their families and as dreadful was that day it inevitably brought our country closer together. Strangers talked to each other and help each other out and it forever enhanced our country’s patriotism. With the remembrance of the survivors and lost loved ones, many ceremonies were dedicated to the fallen ones on that fateful day.

One of the many ceremonies that were held on the two-year anniversary of the attacks was held in Washington D.C… The President of the United States was in attendance as well as his wife and other notable political figures. A moment of silence was held at 846 a.m. EDT, the time of the first plane crash. Bush spoke after the church service he attended and stressed the importance of family. He also mentioned the word “remember” a lot. Here is an example Today our nation remembers. We remember a sad and terrible day, September 11, 001. We remember lives lost. We remember the heroic deeds. We remember the compassion and the decency of our fellow citizens on that terrible day. Not only does he emphasize the word remember but the word “we”. These are examples of repetitions and it clearly shows what point Bush wants to get across. Throughout the article, you can also find examples of strands. For instance, when he is talking about family he mentions all family members. He says, “We pray for the husbands and wives and moms and dads and sons and daughters and loved ones of those who still grieve and hurt.”

The binaries that I was able to find in Bush’s speech were when he was talking about strength, grieving, wisdom, and hurting. I see them as changing and unchanging binaries. I believe that the writer’s most significant writing pattern is repetition. A few key words that he highlights and it is obvious that he is trying to set a poignant mood. It appears that he is trying to get the reader to feel what was going on during Bush’s speech and the somber disposition that people were in that day. He is also letting people know that September 11 is a day not to forget and that we should not forget that day and to stay close to our families. I strongly believe that he chose this writing pattern because repetition forces people to remember things. When you stress words, you tend to retain that information and realize what is important in the article. This article was presented to a group of people who were affected by the attacks of September 11. It can be aimed at the family members of the victims or American families as a whole. In another words, the people of America.

John Stuart Mill’s Autobiography, chapter five, is an analysis of Mill‘s depression. The chapter describes what he did to get in and out of depression and his experiences during depression. Mill claims that his analytical education and the conception of himself is the reason behind his depression. But I believe you must look at his childhood to understand his dejection.

Mill’s education began at age three. He was reading Plato and other Greek writings before age ten. Mill would spend evenings with his father learning arithmetic. John’s father pushed Mill to learn more and more. This type of mental stress on a young adult no older than the age 1 could without a doubt have adverse effects on the person’s future mental health. I believe the abnormal relationship Mill and his sister had also caused mental damage to Mill. Instead of playing and fighting with his sister, Mill had to teach his sister Latin and was held accountable for her mistakes. Mill’s childhood was a definite trigger for his adulthood depression, but this is not the only reason.

Mill was very personally involved with readings. He tried relating his life to what he read. He looked to education and analysis for answers. He analyzed everything he read and learned. Mill spent his childhood studying and learning and that’s it. He never described any social events or social experiences with peers during his childhood. I believe Mill was in depression for most of his life, but it was not until he read Bentham and started at the Westminster Review he realized that he was really depressed.

While in great dejection he sought relief from his books and studies. These were no help to him. I believe it was not having experiences other than learning and education that drove Mill into depression. Mill considered going to his father for aid, but couldn’t. Mill was stuck with nothing but himself and I believe this is what helped him out of depression.

There are times in everyone’s life where you search for the answer and you absolutely cannot find it. You try and do everything and yet in the end it turns out to be right in front of you. This happened to Mill. Mill had everything inside him that he needed to get out of depression, he just needed some guidance to help him out. I believe Mill realized this when he said, “left stranded at the commencement of my voyage, with a well-equipped ship and a rudder, but no sail.” Mill finds his sail in Marmontel’s “Memoires”. It was a certain passage from “Memoires” about the death of Marmontel’s father that caught Mill’s attention. It was about how Marmontel found sudden inspiration to help his family overcome the tragedy of his father’s death. This passage brought light back into Mill’s life and for good reason.

I believe Marmontel’s passage showed Mill he had it in himself to get out of depression. Marmontel found inspiration in himself and that’s what Mill did even though it was subconsciously. Mill makes it seem as if “Memoires” was the reason he overcame depression, but that would make “Memoires” his “well equipped ship and rudder” not his sail. “Memoires” was simply Mill’s sail. It showed him that learning and education do not always have the answers. Sometimes you have to look to other things in life such as social events and playing with your peers.

Mill came out of depression and never felt that depressed or miserable ever again. Mill’s main point was his depression and how he dealt with it. But I believe he tells us much more than that. Mill shows us that answers to problems do not always lie in books or other people, such as his father, but lie in yourself and things you do. He really brings across the point that people need to be well-rounded through having experienced poetry, art, music, and a ride range of emotions in order to achieve happiness.

Lacson says Palace unleashed attack dogs against him

SENATOR Panfilo Lacson said Tuesday Malacañang had unleashed new attack dogs to preempt or even stop him from uncovering his third expose against First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo.

Lacson made the statement following recent moves against him, including the filing of a second complaint on Monday before the Senate ethics committee by a group called Filipino Lawyers for Good Governance (Filgood).

The senator said these attacks shifted to high gear as he prepared to deliver his next round of corruption allegations against Arroyo on the Senate floor when Congress resumes session on Oct. 6.

I have received information that Malacañang even created a task group which has been meeting thrice a week just to make sure that they can put me behind bars before (then), Lacson said in a statement.

The senator claimed that lawyer Arno Sanidad was part of the task group.

Sanidad has issued statements urging the Supreme Court to expedite resolution of the 15 Kuratong Baleleng rubout case, in which Lacson and former officials of the defunct Presidential Anti-Organized-Crime Task Force were implicated. The lawyer said Lacsons exposs against Arroyo were meant to divert attention from the case.

Ricardo Abcede, Filgood national convenor and spokesperson, was another Malacañang attack dog, Lacson said.

Also on Tuesday, Lacson sought dismissal of the libel charges that Arroyo filed against him on Aug. 7.

Lacson and co-respondents Lito Banayo and Cavite Rep. Gilbert Remulla filed individual counter-affidavits before the office of Manila Prosecutor Nestor Gonzalez. Lacson, who was represented by his lawyers, invoked parliamentary immunity.

But he is scheduled to appear before Gonzalez on or before Oct. 1, when Arroyo files his response to the counter-affidavits.

In his libel complaint, Arroyo cited statements made by Lacson in press conferences on Aug. 1 and 0, which, lawyer Jesus Santos said, were not covered by parliamentary immunity.

Reaction

I believe that this sort of news is nothing new when it comes to the political situation in the Philippines. It is but common practice for government officials and legislators to lash at each other in order to satisfy their own personal interests. Its a sad fact that these politicians fail to do anything significant in their stay in office. A full page in the Inquirer was sponspored by some concerned individuals as to expose the Filipino people about the work that is supposedly being accomplished by the Senate. I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw those figures in the paper today. It just goes to show that these senators arent fit to be in office. Theyre probably there for some of their own selfish motives such as taking an opportunity to entice the Filipino people to vote for them. They pass bills to change street names, make priviledge speeches and say anything they want to without any evidence(and mind you...they expect to be immune from trial or suit), and engage in all kinds of other activities that stain the reputation of the government.

A perfect example of how grave the situation is can be depicted by the fact that the president has received a lower rating than before probably because the people are beginning to doubt her credibility as a result of Lacsons allegation about her husbands money laundering activities. What the people dont realize is that Lacson hasnt been able to prove his claims as of yet. It is stated in the Philippine constitution that a man is innocent unless proven guilty so as of yet, the first gentleman isnt guilty of anything. Once this news gets to the international market, it will have a negative effect on the economy as potential investors would think of investing their money in another country.

On a more personal note, Im so sick and tired about these delaying tactics and allegations of these politicians. Ive witnessed many scandals such as the one created by Ador Mawanay, Lacsons involvement in the Kuratong baleleng case, the impeachment trial, etc. Isnt there an end to all of this? Does the Philippine government enjoy being the laughing stock of Asia? Dont get me wrong but I believe that we will never be able to get out of this serious problem unless were aware about whats actually happening. The Filipino people will have to be educated more so as to make more responsible choices on who to put in office. I mean...we have situations wherein people are charging other people with libel, individuals trying to put certain people behind bars so as to silence them temporarily, people resulting to delaying tactics so as to delay the judicial process, etc.

I look forward to the day when I see a Philippine government that actually functions. Id like to see the day that government officials actually look after the welfare of the public instead of plundering the nation for their personal interests. I know that this can be done...its possible but if we dont make a change, this is the way its going to be forever. This will be a dream of mine that will never be realized. I shall continue to pray that the political and economic situation in the Philippines improves. God bless the Philippines.

Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation. Other forms of electromagnetic radiation include radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, ultraviolet rays, X-rays, and gamma rays. All of these are the electromagnetic spectrum and they move at 186,000 miles per second, the speed of light. The only difference between them is their wavelength, which is directly related to the amount of energy the waves carry. The shorter the wavelength of the radiation, the higher the energy. The following categories of the electromagnetic spectrum are shown from longest to shortest wavelength radio waves, microwaves, infrared, ultraviolet radiation, x rays, and gamma rays. The rainbow of colors that we see in visible light represents only a very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum.

X-Rays have so much energy and such a short wavelength that they can go right through you. However, they cannot get through bone as easily as they can get through muscle because of so much calcium. If you have never had an X-Ray, try jumping off a high wall and breaking a bone. The doctors will soon have you fixed they take an X-Ray to see which bones have been broken while dentists use x-rays to see your gums and teeth. These days, X-rays are produced in an X-ray tube by firing a beam of electrons into a Tungsten metal target. Konrad Rontgen discovered X-rays in 185. He was doing an experiment with a fluorescent plate (like a TV screen) and a beam of fast electrons in a tube. By accident he found that the fluorescent plate glowed even when it was a long way from the electron tube; when putting his hand in front of the plate he saw his bones.
