Robert Bateman was born on May 4, 10 in Toronto, Ontario. His house was adjacent to the Forest Hill area, which provided him with ample opportunity to observe nature from a very early age. He knew by the time he was 1 that he would become an artist when he grew up, and took an interest in conservation. Bateman’s early influences were Ernest Thompson-Seton, Roger Tory Peterson and the naturalist painter John James Audubon. He did occasionally paint Cubist, Impressionism and Abstract Expressionism works at this time. During the summers of 147-4 Bateman had a job in Algonquin Park as a wildlife research scientist, and this strengthened his love of the wilderness. He felt honoured to be a part of the landscape where the Group of Seven, who influenced him greatly, had primarily focused on. Bateman considered himself a Group of Seven ‘groupie.’ He then took lessons from the great painter Gordon Payne. When he was enrolled in the University of Toronto for geography, he took extra-curricular art lessons with the famous Carl Schaefer, who was actually a part of the Group of Seven. Bateman received a job at a secondary school teaching geography and art. During a vacation to the U.S., he saw an art show by the naturalist Andrew Wyeth, and realized that art could capture the spirit and life of a subject in ways that he thought only possible by very expressive and impressionistic means. This was the turning point in his career, and he has since painted some of the most famous natural scenes ever. He paints with impeccable detail and forces the viewer to observe every hair and feather. Bateman proves his careful attention to form, colour and light and always adds a sense of drama in his pieces. Usually it takes him at least a year to finish a painting. He likes to be on site for many of his works, but recently has been content to paint from photographs. As an outstanding contributor to Canadian culture, Bateman was named an officer of the Order of Canada in 184. In 187 he received the Governor Generals Award in Quebec City for his contribution to conservation in Canada. He has painted for Prince Charles, Prince Philip, the late Princess Grace of Monaco and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. Robert Bateman remains one of Canadas finest artists and his contributions to protecting the environment will be a lasting legacy.
