Try to imagine a place where 4,000 people are helplessly killed every day, and no one even attempts to stop the killing! Maybe you are thinking of a third-world country with a merciless dictator, or maybe you are thinking of a remote tribe who sacrifices people for religious beliefs. This place is actually much closer than you might think. This place is right here in the United States! How does this criminal activity take place legally? It is under the disguise of abortion, the number one killer in the United States.

Abortion is legal in the United States at any time throughout the entire nine months of pregnancy… FOR ANY REASON. January , 17, marked the start of this merciless killing of unborn children when the US Supreme Court legalized unrestricted abortion. Since then, approximately 40 million babies have been murdered just in the United States. Worldwide, the lifetime average is about one abortion per woman. If you took the amount deaths accrued from every major war that the US has ever fought, it would only account for less than percent of the total number of deaths caused by abortion. It is amazing how one decision by seven people has killed about 1 percent of the US population.

A mother kills her baby because it is unwanted, yet she is not charged with murder. Is this right? Many people approve of abortion because they consider that a fetus is not an individual human until birth. Here are some facts that prove otherwise. On day one of fertilization, all the human chromosomes

are present, giving the baby certain physical characteristics. By day , the heart begins to beat with the child’s own blood, which is often a different type than the mother’s blood. During week 6, brain waves can be detected, and the mouth, lips, and fingernails are forming. By week 1, the baby can experience pain. The sad thing is that half of all abortions are done after this period, meaning the baby can feel what is being done to it. As one can see, human life starts far before birth.

It should be remembered that a death occurs every time an abortion is performedthe death of an unborn child. If a doctor killed a baby one minute after it was born, he would be charged with murder; but if he was to kill a baby one minute before it was born, the doctor would not be considered a murderer. At what minute can one consider life worthless and the next precious?

Abortion stops the beating of an innocent childs heart. People must no longer ignore the scientific evidence that life begins at the moment of conception. People can no longer ignore the medical and emotional problems that an abortion causes the women and children. People must stop denying the facts about the procedure, and start hearing the silent screams of unborn children.

The ancient Mayas of Central America built one of the most highly developed native civilizations ever found in the Western Hemisphere. In art, agriculture, and mathematics they equalled or outdid all of their counterparts. And for nearly seven centuries (50-00 A.D.) they controlled the area of Central America now known as Guatemala, Belize, western Honduras, and El Salvador, and the entire Yucatan Peninsula.

Then suddenly the entire Mayan civilization collapsed. Hundreds of splendid temple-topped stone pyramids, many of which were nearly 00 feet high, fell into disrepair. Beautiful cities like Palenque, the buildings of which once covered nearly 17 square miles, were quickly overgrown by the jungle.

The whole process took less than 100 years. This is no time at all if you consider that the Mayan civilization had been around for 1000 years before reaching its peak between 50 and 00. Yet to this day, no one is really certain how or why this decline happened. I read

a book from Richard Halliburton a famous German traveller and explorer who studied this civilization of ancient Mayas. According to his researches he found out that Mayas were very progressing. While Europe was still struggling through the Dark Ages, the Mayas were using a calendar that was more accurate than the one we use today. Mayan astronomers were able to predict solar and lunar eclipses, and they had calculated the path of Venus so precisely that their error was only 1 day in 6000 years! The Mayans were using the concept of zero in their numbering system several hundred years before it was introduced in the Old World.

So how could such an advanced civilization fall so far so fast? Many explanations have been offered, including earthquakes and disease. Even the possibility that an invasion was responsible for the fall has not yet been ruled out. But many scholars feel that the answer may have more to do with the internal structure of Mayan society than with some natural disaster or outside force.

The cultural elite of Mayan civilization were the priests, astronomers, chiefs, and other members of the aristocracy. Comparatively small in number, they were supported by the labour of large masses of peasants. It is thought that the peasants may have rebelled because they were overtaxed and that they overcame their rulers through sheer weight of numbers. However, since the rulers alone knew how to read and write and how to plan and repair buildings, this and other cultural knowledge vanished with them, causing the civilizations rapid collapse. That, at least, is one theory.

Unless we discover some way to turn back the clock, we may never know the whole story. But as investigations continue, we will certainly learn more about these remarkable people the magnificent Mayas.

To others, the world is a peaceful and quiet haven for everybody; some see it as a great wide somewhere still subject to explorations and discoveries; but to the unfortunate, it is nothing but a rat trap that closes in on everyone.

Misfortune does not only take what is left to people but also makes them think ill of the world. It’s the sole reason that the rat trap peddler condemned the world as a huge rat trap with earthly pleasure as its obvious bait. So much as misfortune caused him hatred, prejudice and discrimination caused all these bad lucks. It is by these two that he was always tempted to steal, which always plunged him deeper in the world’s rat trap. People knew that he was a thief and they had never given him a chance to change. He wasn’t treated as human but as a rat trapped in his own rat trap. Prejudice stains the finest of silks much less than the filthiest of rags. Life for the poor peddler was too bad that his every action led to a dreadful enclosure. Fatal solitude is the sentence of the society to him. He was left alone because of his rag clothing.

When he thought that nobody would ever accept him, Edla Willmansson came and saved him from another trap that her father, the ironmaster, was about to set upon the poor tramp. She was the only one who understood that the man needs heat and shelter for the cold Christmas Eve, which to him means death. The coldness of the condemning society was over-powered by the unequaled warmth offered by the girl’s kindness. Although he wasn’t the man that her father thought he was, Edla gave him the treatment he had always been dreaming of. He was treated the same way as people treat people. He was even raised to a captain despite of being an uneducated man. The world he once thought as a huge rat trap was changed into a magnificent sanctuary by the humility of a girl. The prejudice and the discrimination of the people were wrapped by humility. Before he thought that life for him was unkind so he continued doing bad things to displease the society more. He never thought of changing until this young lady had actually peeped through his life like no other person would do. She did not only give him heat and shelter for the night but also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change. He was reminded that he still was a human after all the adversities he had undergone.

As discrimination and prejudice encloses to anyone, acceptance secures everybody. Edla accepted the peddler no matter who he really was a virtue rare yet powerful enough to give him faith to humanity.

By acceptance, he was raised to heavens. He could now forget who was before and live a new life away from the trap. He now believed that he was not alone because somebody still care for him and that he needed not to steal in able to live. He should only have to possess a virtue that is to live life as honestly as he could. Faith fights temptation. As long as you believe you will never be pulled by any other force, which opposes your virtue.

All human misfortunes come from a single source temptation. From the very first page of human history, temptation has always lured men towards damnation. Temptations, such as money, material things, and other earthly pleasures can always bring man to his own doom because these are nothing but temporary joy. This doom is nothing but the rat trap. The rat trap is actually not earth itself. The rat trap is only a thing that the society created in their minds. It’s not a consequence for everything you do but for an ill deed.

Life is but an adventure not a mere rat trap. We must do what we think we must do because our fate lies in our hands. We must not be afraid of the possible consequences of our actions because fear paralyzes us. There is more in life than what we fear of. Life should be as boundless as the universe. Our life shoaled be as limitless as the stars in the skies.

In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. There are two contrasting views regarding what to do about the global population dilemma. One

of these is the belief that the relatively recent population explosion means that there are simply too many

people on the planet, meaning that sustainability of global resources is impossible.

The world is at carrying capacity. The next generation will certainly not have enough resources to survive, and there will be a thinning out a war, a famine, or a plague will reduce the earths numbers until the planets population is once again manageable. Vashti, USA (BBC Talking Point)

Write my Essay on examine the causes and concenquences of global warming

essay writing service

The contrasting opinion to this is saying that the global availability of resources is certainly

enough to meet the demands of an ever-increasing population, but only if distribution is fairer it is

fair to say that this is a more egalitarian viewpoint.

I do not believe that earths population has reached its limit. Population growth needs space and resources. Both of these are being mismanaged by greedy governments and business. Elbert Joseph, Canada (BBC Talking Point)

TOO MANY PEOPLE

In Ethiopia, the poverty rate is such that the calorie supply per capita is on average 7% of what is

considered the minimum requirement, and child malnutrition is such that 64% are stunting, 8%

wasting.

In Cameroon 4.1% of households are without any electricity. In Kenya homes are not allowed any

electricity during the day.

Increasing population -- More demand for energy -- Further exploitation of fossil fuels --

Greater CO emissions during fuel burning plus sulphur dioxide & NOx released -- Greenhouse

Effect & Global Warming problems significantly worsened, as well as acid rain.

Birth control? In Niger the fertility rate is 7.1 and is on average 5. for the entire of Africa.

In North Africa Islam is the main religion, i.e. in Algeria % are Muslim, who are heavily against

abortion, and also promote family values.

In many heavily agriculture-based LEDCs such as India, people find it necessary to have many

children for (a) to help work on the land, (b) look after them in later age, (c) they hope that by doing

this some will survive. In some cultures children are also seen as a sign of fertility.

S/L? In Burkina only 1 person in 00 has a TV, 1 in 1000 a car, 1 in 500 a telephone…

FAIRER & BETTER DISTRIBUTION IS NEEDED

Though in Ethiopia on average people get only 7% of what is regarded as the daily minimum

requirement, the average Irishman gets 157% of this. However, the Green Revolution in India has

significantly increased crop yields (though this has been of little benefit to the poor, arguably).

Though electricity is sparse in some African countries, % of Italian homes have electricity.

However, with UN funding, there are projects in LEDCs to find alternative sources of energy, and to

increase efficiency.

It is the MEDCs that contribute the vast amount to problems such as Global Warming, though it

shall be the LEDCs in particular that may suffer from it in the future. Nations are coming together

to try and tackle these problems, though, e.g. limiting exploitation of resources.

There have been successful family planning programmes introduced in LEDCs, e.g. in Kerela, India,

the fertility rate is 50% lower than other regions.

In LEDCs, linked with family planning programmes is teaching couples how to control births

without going against religious values e.g. Islam is not anti-contraception.

In many LEDCs, increasing economic efficiency leads to more funding for e.g. the health service it

is common to see infant mortality rates decreasing, as with the death rates. Because of this, some

parents now have less children as they believe all may will survive.

There appears to be an upward trend regarding the standard of living in the majority of all

countries, as often government-related schemes teach people how to be efficient when spending, and

arguably in many nations average wages are increasing.

MY VIEW

I believe that in general, there simply are too many people on Earth for present and future

sustainability of resources to be possible. It is certainly true that there is an incredible contrast in

lifestyle, exploitation of resources etc between e.g. USA and Burkina, though I believe that the concept of

equal distribution can only go to some extent, and the concept of everyone on this planet having equal

levels of finance, calorie intake etc is rather surreal.

The main reason, in my opinion, to why some countries have significantly more than others, is

geographical inertia. For example, in western European countries there is a climate ideal for growing

crops, and numerous resources available for electricity. Compare this with the Sahel nations, where

drought means that few crops can be planted, or Bangladesh, where during monsoon season 0% or so of

the nation is flooded, hindering the process of development to cater for a growing population.

The previous page showed a contrast regarding calorie intake, and it would be fair to say that if

all food was shared out poverty may be almost eradicated. However, although a fairer distribution on a

global scale may seem a sensible idea, it has limits…e.g. although Europe produces literally millions of

tonnes in food mountains each year, transporting this to LEDCs is more difficult than it sounds, in

my opinion. And it is not possible in most cases to send vast amounts of energy across continents.

A main problem when creating the two lists on the previous page was that for the Better & Fairer

Distribution sector, there are always problems that contradict what was written. For example, many

family planning programmes have not been successful due to illiteracy, wars between neighbouring

countries (e.g. Rwanda & Burundi) hinder any progress in e.g. health services, with a lot of government

money spent on Arms, even though Islam is not anti-contraception the availability of them in LEDCs is

often poor, Global Warming is continuing to rise, and any restrictions may slow down but certainly do

not decrease the rate…

Another problem when considering sharing out is the general characteristics of areas. For

example, I believe it is fair to stereotype America as a heavily capitalist nation. Due to this, they may not

wish to share out resources, wealth etc unless it is of benefit to them their spending on aid (0.1%) is

only half that which UN desire. Here religious influence may be significant, i.e. Islam promotes charity,

and Saudi Arabia gives .% of its GNP to other countries. Although it may be possible for food

mountains to be transported to poorer nations without it losing its goodness, who is willing to fund such

a project?

Although mechanisation and industrial efficiency has significantly increased in the last

decades, and is predicted to continue, I believe that it is unlikely that this shall cater for a global

population growing at an exponential rate.

Many people may sincerely believe that education should be focused on providing students with a value system, a standard, a set of ideas. Nevertheless, some people insist that education should be job-oriented. In my point of view, education has dual purposes, or it should be a combination of the two mentioned above.

Values, standards and ideas are, in some degree, the fundamental elements of education. For instance, if education is a skyscraper, they are, then, bricks on which the building is based. They function as the raw material and nutrients for learning, solving problems, imaging and creating. It is ,thus, impossible for a scientist to invent a device without being aware of the basic scientific rules.

Education actually consists of two parts, professional and non-professional. Professional education is job-oriented, while non-professional education is academic. The MBA program, for example, is a suitable demonstration. Students receiving professional education can start working immediately after graduation, and it is not necessary for the company to spend money and time on training them. Therefore, professional education serves the needs of society and combines the academic knowledge with practical work perfectly.

However, when education aims only at job preparation, it deteriorates into training. The distinction between education and training at the remark is important education serves the long-term needs of society and training the short-term needs.

To my fellow poet John Donne,

I write to inform thee of ye superb composition aptly titled “Meditation XVII”. Ideas coming from only deep thought, with thy apparent knowledge of the number of people who fathom daily, gives thee right to call it a meditation. In thy account, ye dictates of a spiritual calling God yerns for thee, solely revealing itself through series of hardships and troubles. Even though they are all close and sincere to thee, thy addiction to all things sweet is apparent. True meaning doth come whence thy soul doth separate from these things. Yes, true revelation draws nearer when depth and advancement of ye heart and soul transcends thy things. For truth is the wind that can violently gust away all ye earthly treasures, yet bear a gentle breeze of blessings, in either case not knowing for what reason. Addressing that although one carries differences in terms of character, spiritual purposes are intertwined with one another. Bring this only through a loss of the breath of life, a connection of self and deceased materialize in terms of ye spirit.

Loss of experiences and forgotten memories, valued and held dear by one become none --- absent and dispersed. Loss of understanding and growth doth follow and haunt thee, ringing a bell noting so. Yet, as ye say, is God’s own version, “bind[ing] up all our scattered leaves” (11) so that maybe one may read the newly edited literature that “lie open to one another” (1). Reading line-by-line, truth approaches thee upon insight of obscurities and pieces of good fortune shall spiritual awareness sprout. However, for one man’s death or “one chapter torn out of the book, but translated into a better language” () depends on the soul browsing the chapter. Absence of similar experiences and knowledge pertaining to serves no encroachment to the spirit, just as the yield and quality of the fruit depends exclusively on the pollination of a bee.

Thy enlightenment did please my soul, for thy comprehension of values aforementioned signifies understanding in a meek two dwelling on this rock. One can only encourage the continuation of thee deep ideals and theories and hope whoever reads thy own chapters can follow what thy heart and spirit desires.

Though it is said that there is no real agreed

definition for astrobiology, as I see it, the universal

meaning can be defined as the part of biology with a

primary interest in studying life in the Universe. This

essay writing service

includes the origin and evolution of life in outer space

and on Earth.

Astrobiology is a compilation of an array of scientific

disciplines which includes biology, astronomy,

technology, and ecology. Planetary biology, the study

of “human spaceflight and how life first came into

existence” and exobiology, “the study of other planets

both in our Solar System and those orbiting around other

stars” are probably the most recognized of these of

disciplines.

Astrobiologists search for answers to endless questions.

Some of them are How did life on earth come to be? Can

or does life exist on other planets? What will be

necessary for human life to survive in outer space? What

future challenges may be faced on Earth and beyond?

These biologists seek to understand and determine the

beginning of life and how life affects or are affected

by the environment from which it evolved. Within this

field of study, there have been numerous accounts of

life’s existence on Mars. In 16 scientists with the

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

reported proof of microscopic life form on Mars

approximately 4 billion years ago. They found a large

meteorite that had broken off from Mars when it was hit

by an asteroid over15 million years ago. This meteorite

was found on Earth in the South Pole and appeared to

have landed there 1,000 years ago. “Researchers found

tubular structures lodged in the clay inside the

meteorite, which NASA believes are fossilized bacterial

forms .6 billion years old”. They were able to

determine that the meteorite was in fact from Mars by

comparing its chemical structure to data obtained by the

Viking explorer, a spacecraft developed by NASA 0 years

prior to orbit and land on Mars. It had the ability to

not only take pictures and collect data from the Martian

surface but it could also conduct experiments. In

addition to the discoveries made in 16, on February

7, 001, The SpaceDaily reported a second research

group from NASA to report evidence of life on Mars based

on similarities between the Martian magnetite crystals

and crystals formed inside magnetotactic bacteria

present on Earth. The results of this research, referred

to as the Ames study, were able to confirm a biological

origin because the crystals were of similar size, shape,

did not touch, and the chains they formed were curved.

“Since bacteria on Earth that use magnetic forces

require some oxygen, researchers said their presence on

the meteorite denotes that there were plant-like

organisms using photosynthesis on Mars . billion years

ago”. Scientists from Budapest, Hungary have also

reported evidence of life on Mars after they analyzed

over 60, 000 pictures taken by the Mars Global Surveyor

probe, an orbital technologic invention capable of

scanning and collecting data from the surface floor of

Mars. The team stated that the pictures revealed proof

of many dark dune spots located in craters in Mars’

southern polar region. These spots are similar to

organisms found near the South Pole on Earth. Tibor

Ganti, a biologist and team member stated that “these

spots indicate that on the surface below the ice there

are such organisms which, absorbing solar energy, are

able to melt the ice and create conditions of life for

themselves”. Extra-solar planets, also referred to as

exoplanets, have provided researchers information in

determining life in the Universe. These planets are in

addition to the nine in our solar system. They orbit

around stars other than the sun. The Doppler Effect has

proven to be effective in monitoring stars’ light by

using a process called spectroscopy where the star light

is detected by separating the light of a star into the

light’s colors. “The elements present in a star emit

light especially strongly in particular colors, creating

Tackling Childhood Obesity

The editorial “Tackling childhood obesity” published in the Mercury, presents a strong opinion on Tasmanian children eating their way into obesity and not exercising at a high enough rate. The writer has used the persuasion technique in order to get the parents to feed their children nutritionally and non manufactured fatty foods and agree with what is being said.

The editor has written the column in a pretty serious tone, which demands the readers into having the same views on the subject as the writer does, which shows the tone is used as another method of persuasion. Using this demanding tone readers are more likely to think about the subject and the effects it can have on their children and the community. This is shown by releasing facts on the subject, which tell us about the risks involved. A major thought is ‘researchers have discovered early signs of heart disease by the time they are 10,’ using these facts the article is thought over a lot more by the readers and more action is likely to be taken by the readers.

The column is directly aimed at parents with young children, in an attempt to persuade parents to stop supporting big companies produce manufactured fatty foods which are known as ‘treats’ and are most commonly loved by most children. By directing this article to parents, the supply of these fatty treats to kids is due to decrease if parents are persuaded in a big enough way, to stop feeding children these unhealthy snacks.

Rhetorical question are used, asking “who’s to blame?” for the big problem of childhood obesity. A sub-heading ‘exercising’ is also used to tell the readers exercise is also a must for all children. Loaded language is used, ‘parents who are honest,’ in an attempt to make the parent feel guilty about what they are doing for their children. The editor also used an experts opinion to make the parents feel even more guilty stating “the obesity epidemic is one that parents are in the position of control,” using this second persons opinion it tells the reader the editor is not the only person stating there is a problem in childhood obesity in today’s society.

The use of the popular T.V Teletubies icons also come into the column, saying that it is there fault and another factor that being overweight is fine. The editor uses this as another method into the persuasion to make parents stop their children watching T.V and find better things, like exercise to do with their time.

Throughout the column the editor has certainly expressed his views and what he thinks about child obesity in Tasmania. Persuasion is the major technique the editor has used whilst combining his views with expert opinions. Emotional language has been commonly used throughout the column in order to make the reader feel guilt and are therefore more likely to change their habit on feeding the children fatty ‘treats.’

MY LIFE - A MIRACLE

Im sorry Mrs. Braganza, but the case is serious. Youll have to rush your daughter immediately to the hospital, I suspect it’s a case of Meningitis.

Those were the words of Dr. Kulkarni to my mother on my illness.

Meningitis was a word outside my mothers dictionary, she stared blankly at the doctor and then told him But doctor, my daughter has been under medication for fever for the past days and just today her condition had worsened with her unable to retain any food. The doctor went on to explain the symptoms of Meningitis, which was high fever followed by vomiting and a stiffness in the neck..

Meningitis is an infection which causes inflation of the membranes covering the brain and spinal cord It is an extremely dangerous illness, the onset of the symptoms are sudden, and death can follow within hours. In as many as 10-15% of survivors there could be neurological defects like hearing loss, speech disorders, loss of limbs, mental retardation and paralysis.

My mother looked at me with shock and disbelief, I had always been an healthy child and if I did get sick, they were the normal childhood sickness. How could this happen to her daughter, she wondered.

However, there was no time to waste, it was past 10 in the night and I was rushed to the nearest hospital. As luck would have it, the doctor was still in and I was immediately put as an Emergency case. All I can remember is, there were these nurses who mercilessly poked needles into my spine and me screaming and crying with pain. Then everything went blank.

I regained my senses after nearly 15 days. That night, Im told, I was given just 1 hours to live, the doctor was very frank when he told my mother that if I lived I would probably loose the function of some of my organs, become mentally retarded and if my mother believed in miracles then I would come out unscathed. My mother was a devout woman and she put her entire trust in the Lord.

1 hours later, I was said to be out of danger but there was a difference in me, my eyes turned squint, my hands and legs seemed twisted and I began to behave differently. I woke up many times but I failed to recognise anybody. I was immediately referred to a nuero surgeon and put under several medications.

Word was sent to my school and the Parish to pray for me, every day at the school assembly special prayers were said for my recovery. My condition was so bad that I was even administered the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick.

Although I was out of danger, there was no improvement in me. Would I be a vegetable for the rest of my life. After a week, I was rushed to Bombay Hospital for a CT scan. Surprisingly, all the reports showed that I was perfectly fine and had come out of the life threatening sickness unimpaired.

But I had still not regained my conciousness and people kept praying for me fervently for another miracle to happen. There is so much power in prayers that just days before my 14th birthday, I woke up from my sleep and kept wondering where I was. I saw the smiling face of my mother and she explained to me that I was in hospital. Slowly my memory returned and I remembered the needles being pricked into my spine.

I was in hospital for one full month and away from school for months. Thats how long it took for my recovery. When I went for my check up to Dr. Kulkarni, this is what he said, Praise God, this is your nd life, a miracle indeed.

Miracle, now what is this Miracle Im talking about? The dictionary defines a Miracle as a supernatural event, an event which creates faith.

Do you believe in miracles or is there anyone out here, who does not believe in miracles.

For those who do not believe in miracles, this is what I have to say The very fact that you woke up this morning is a miracle, that you can see is a miracle, that you can feel and speak are all but miracles, which we take for granted.

You could have had a heart attack last night and died in your sleep, or probably you could have met with a fatal accident while on your way to work and if you were to escape, then you would say Its a miracle, Im alive. When you escape the jaws of death, that’s when you realise that your life is a miracle, a blessing from the Lord above.

My life is a miracle. To me every hour of my day is a miracle, each part of my being is a miracle. Im living today is the work of a miracle.

I conclude in the words of Albert Einstein There are ways to live your life, one is as though nothing is a miracle and the other is as though everything is a miracle

Two types of CASLR

?Gather evidence about the effects of instructional conditions of learning

?Assessment; to make inferences about aspects of learners?language ability and learning (vocabulary, metacognitive strategies)

Investigating conditions for SLA

Write my Essay on Computer-assisted SLA research

essay writing service

Doughty’s characterization of the three facets of her computer

Design the CASLR tasks intended for students?language learning

Description the process of computer-assisted data description replies on a computer program to assist in identifying, tabulating, and organizing SLA data which were gathered through a computer-assisted research task or through other means.

Discovery refers to the use of computer for statistical analysis of data (Davidson, 16).

CASLA for investigating instructional conditions;

Dekeyser (15) investigated whether explicit-deductive or implicit-inductive learning worked better for simple categorical grammar rules and for linguistic prototypes.

Dekeyser (17) investigated the hypothesis that explicitly learned morphosyntactic rules (gender, case marking) would become gradually automatized through practice.

Graaff ( 17) controlled the instructional treatments in his comparison of implicit and explicit instruction throughout a course that lasted approximately 15 hours.

Robinson (16) four conditions of instruction implicit (memorize sentences containing the relevant grammatical structure), incidental (to read input sentences for meaning), rule-search (asking learners to identify the rules that were illustrated by the input sentences), and instructed condition (providing learners with explicit rules about the target grammatical points.

The selection of participants, control of conditions, and testing that can be done in an experiment exceeds that which is possible in the language classroom, and therefore results may from a more stable basis for theory.

Other condition for SLA

Hulstijn (17) made a distinction between two types of studies 1) ‘pertinent of theories of SLA?) applied studies such as investigations into CALL

Both investigate theory-based predictions of the effects of specific psycholinguistic conditions on learning outcomes.

Ayoun found some support for ‘recast?CALL materials designed to operationalize one of the three condition

Hulstijn (000) 1. automaticity of lexical access through CALL materials (computer games)

. compares incidental acquisition of words looked up during reading and during writing, both of which were perceived as instructional tasks by learners.

Evaluation of learning condition CASLA

Hulstijn (17)?instructional conditions

1. the quality of operationalizaiton of the learning condition. . the participation of the learners in the condition. . the generalizability of result.

Operationalization of learning conditions

The researcher has correctly constructed the operational conditions theorized to produce particular effects and that the learners actually participate as intended in those conditions.

The quality of a learning condition depends on the extent to which learners actually took part in the conditions available during instruction.

Generalizability also called external or ecological validity, refers to the extent to which results can be considered relevant to contexts beyond the research setting.

Laboratory SLA studies trade the authenticity of the learning environment for the control of the laboratory design in which learner’s prior knowledge and the conditions of their learning are carefully monitored.

Evaluation of generalizability relies on the authenticity of the research task relative to the other tasks to which generalization might be made.

Difficulty level needs to evaluated in two dimensions the difficulty of the language for the learner, and the difficulty of the conditions for performance.

Impact and practicality are aspects of research tasks that are sometimes overlooked because of overriding concerns for obtaining result at whatever cost. The researcher faced the same set of challenges that confront commercial testing programs attempting to deliver tests in locations where computers are not available.

Summary

Results have overwhelmingly favored explicit learning conditions in these settings; however, researchers have cautioned that results from laboratory setting may have limited generalizability to L classrooms. Generalizability is one of the criteria for evaluation of these research tasks. Others are quality of operationalization of learning conditions, difficulty level, impact and practicality.

Computer-assisted research tasks for assessment

CASLR tasks designed for assessment are used to draw inferences about aspects of learners?language ability, which can be defined as language knowledge and strategies (Bachman 10; Bachman & Palmer, 16). The inferential process used in SLA assessment is the same as that used in language testing observed performance on a carefully designed task is summarized and treated as evidence for particular underlying capacities of the learner about which the user wants to make an inference.

Examples of CASLR for assessment

Language knowledge

In a study investigating learners?developing linguistics knowledge, learners were instructed to use specially designed software for writing their essays in French (Bland et al., 10). This program include bilingual dictionary. Longitudinal observation of learners?queries to the dictionary, which the researcher interpreted as indicators of learners?stages of lexical development.

The lowest level ?‘token matching?

The second level ?‘type matching?

The third level ?‘relexicalization?

Strategies and processes

Hulstijn (1) investigated vocabulary strategies through learners?use of an on-line dictionary.

Doughty & Fought (184) Automaticity of access to grammar.

Doughty & Fought (184) Inferencing and hypothesis-testing

Examples of research assessing learners?knowledge and strategies with CASLR tasks (p.144)

Automaticity in language processing in hypothesized to be indicative of language knowledge efficiently stored for expedient retrieval; as an aspect of the target language is better learned, restructuring of knowledge occurs, making access more automatic and therefore quicker (McLaughlin, 187; 10)

Evaluation of CASLR for assessment

Evaluation of new forms of assessments such as those used in CASLR requires reexamination of the tenets of measurement theory.

Advance preparation When performance such as the amount of time the learner waits before responding to a question is interpreted as an advance preparation strategy.

When students?queries to an on-line dictionary are interpreted as a level of vocabulary ability.

A logical usefulness analysis

Reliability the construct is hypothesized to be consistent over time and the task is not expected to introduce any construct unmotivated variance because of its consistency.

Construct validity the construct is clearly defined and procedure for assessing the construct appear appropriate.

Authenticity the activity was authentic relative to learners?normal class assignments, but not relative to language use outside the classroom.

Intercativeness the activity requires to little interaction among aspects of language knowledge and strategies, and only narrow aspects of language knowledge (e.g., phonology, syntax)

Impact the assessment was unobtrusive and conducted during normal class work; it did not produce a score which would affect their grades. Therefore, it would be expected to have little impact on students and teachers. It would be affect the SLA profession to the extent that the research is read, and drawn upon, in subsequent work.

Practicality Given the technology and personnel resources, the assessment was very practical at the time and location where it was conducted.

Empirical usefulness analysis

The reliability was estimated as the degree of internal consistency of the assessment.

Construct validity was supported to some extent through the theoretically predicted correlation with a style variable ‘reflectivity-impulsivity.?

In addition to construct validity argument, the usefulness analysis requires empirical data pertaining to authenticity, intercativeness, impact, and practicality.

Usefulness issues in CASLR assessment

Construct validity

Trait-oriented definition vs interactionalist definition (p. 15)

Reliability

The reliability of assessment in SLA research needs to be considered in view of construct theory. In the example of advanced preparation, the expected strong reliability of the assessment across time was hypothesized because of the trait-type definition of advance preparation.

Authenticity and interactiveness

CASLR assessment hold strong potential for authenticity because they can be built into instructional materials that are seen by learners to be a normal and useful part of their learning.

The degree of interactiveness can be strengthened by looking toward instructional materials with a clear meaning focus.

Impact and practicality

One has to consider the possibility that learners?knowledge of data collection may disturb some students, particularly those who are less accustomed to using the computer.

The more interesting and important issue is the need to use assessments made during instruction to improve instruction.

the complementarity between language testing and SLA research

1. SLA researchers tend to focus on assessment of specific aspects of language abilities whereas educational uses of assessments often measure more broadly defined constructs.

. The greater interest of SLA researchers in assessment of processing aspects of language ability relative to educational language testers, who have tended to define constructs in term of static abilities.

. In practice SLA researchers are often interested in assessment for the purpose of detecting change in specific aspects of ability over time.

Conclusion

Early CASLR investigating some questions of interest in SLA (assessment of learners?language knowledge & strategies)

CASLR used the same principles as those of language testing and is therefore subject to the same evaluation principles as CALT.

Engaging these fundamental measurement issues is essential if the next generations of CASLR assessment are to move beyond what has been done in the past.

Sociology turned out to be a very interesting subject. Before hand, I assumed that sociology would be similar to psychology. But, it turns out that, the two subjects are completely different from each other. Sociology covers various subjects that shape societies. There are many essential elements that play a key role in shaping societies.

First of all, socialization is a life long process of interaction with people. This process immediately starts at birth. Family is your first socialization agent and the most powerful agent. Family will be there from day one, until the day you become a mature adult and leave the household. The beliefs and values you have start in the family. These beliefs and values are slowly embedded in your mind, which in this case becomes second nature to you. Your family teaches you, your basic skills, from eating with a fork and spoon, going to the bathroom correctly and even tying your shoe laces. It’s pretty amazing when you think about all the things you have been taught by your family.

Secondly, another agent of socialization is school. After, age five you are already off to school for numerous of years. Attending school has an enormous affect on socialization. You are introduced to others you don’t know which, allows you to adapt and interact with others in your new environment. Socializing is a very powerful tool that will help you become more effective in your years to come. School also teaches

student education because we don’t want to have an ignorant society. School also teaches individuals to be quiet, to be on time, do homework, and follow directions. This procedure sounds like work. School is also teaching children work ethics.

Thirdly, peer groups and mass media are the other agents of socialization. Peer groups are people who share common interests, opinions, and ideas that will be shared throughout your peers. Mass media has recently expanded through technology. Mass media includes various tools such as, radios, televisions, newspapers and the Internet. These tools provide a way to get an array of messages across the country. Many people in America use these types of devices very day.

In addition, it is important to understand how we as a society form opinions and function. By knowing this we can have a better understanding of what is going on in today’s world, why things occur and the reason behind it. By knowing these things it will improve are way of life for generations to come.

COMPARE AND CONTRAST MACBETH AND LADY MACBETH BOTH PRIOR TO THE MURDER OF DUNCAN AND AFTERWARD.

Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are basically good people who make an ill judgement. It is unfair for Malcolm to describe them as this dead butcher and his fiend - like queen. In the beginning they are respected people who share a loving relationship. Their downfall is caused by their ambition for Macbeth to be great, sparked by the witches prophecy, and not because they are evil. Macbeths indecision on whether or not to kill Duncan, and Lady Macbeths begging of the spirits to take away her feminine qualities, show that ruthlessness does not come easily to them.

Lady Macbeth is a loyal wife with ambitions for her husband. She believes that Macbeth deserves to be King, but thinks that he is too nice to do anything about it. She does not think that he could kill Duncan on his own. She is supportive of Macbeth, and is willing to do what she can to help him get what he wants. She is basically a caring and loving person, though, so she pleads with the Spirits to take away her tenderness and femininity and make her ruthless Come, you spirits that tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here, and fill me, from the crown to the toe, top full of direst cruelty. This evidence on Macbeth and Lady Macbeth proves that, at the beginning of the play, they are both good, virtuous people.

When the witches predict that he shall be king, Macbeth does not think that he should do anything about making the prophecy come true If Chance will have me king, why Chance may crown me without my stir. However, when King Duncan places an extra obstacle in his way by naming his son, Malcolm, as his successor, Macbeth realises that, if he is to be king, then he must kill Duncan The Prince of Cumberland! That is a step on which I must fall down, or else oerleap. For in my way it lies. Stars hide your fires, let not light see my black and deep desires.

When Lady Macbeth reads in her husbands letter of the witches prediction, she, too, realises that Duncan must be killed for it to come true. She thinks that Macbeth deserves to be great, and should murder Duncan so that this can be so, but she believes that he is too noble and honest to do something so immoral Yet do I fear thy nature It is too full othe milk of human-kindness to catch the nearest way. Thou wouldst be great Art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it.

Although Macbeth wants to be king, he does not wish to kill Duncan, and he thinks aloud to himself of his reasons First, as I am his kinsman and his subject, strong both against the deed; then, as his host, who should against his murderer shut the door, not bear the knife myself. Macbeth does not want to kill Duncan because he is his king and close relation, and because it is his duty as host to protect him. This shows that he is not evil. If he were, his kinship and duty to the king would offer no hindrance to his decision to murder him.

Lady Macbeth knows that Macbeths conscience and indecision will hinder his ambitions. It is because of this that she resolves to use brave, scolding and punishing words to drive away his doubts, and to encourage him to commit the deed that will obtain him the crown Hie thee hither, that I may pour my spirits in thine ear, and chastise with the valour of my tongue all that impedes thee from the golden round.

Although Lady Macbeth is supportive of her husband, and tries to persuade him to murder Duncan, she does not force him to do it. Macbeth decides to kill Duncan on his own, with his tragic flaw, ambition, as the main influence of his decision. For Macbeth to be a tragedy, as Shakespeare intended it to be, no one must force him to make the decision that ultimately brings him down. He must make the decision, based on his tragic flaw, on his own.

After murdering Duncan, Macbeth is agitated and frightened. He forgets to place the daggers near Duncans guards as he planned to, and is too afraid to go near the place of murder to correct the mistake Ill go no more. I am afraid to think what I have done; Look ont again I dare not. Macbeth wishes to wash his hands of Duncans blood, and thus the deed, but believes that no amount of water could remove all the blood Will all great Neptunes ocean wash this blood clean from my hand? No, He regrets killing Duncan, wishing that he would wake from his sleep of death Wake Duncan with thy knocking! I would thou couldst!

Lady Macbeth, on the other hand, is calm and logical immediately after the murder. She does not appear to be at all worried about being caught, believing that, by cleaning their hands of blood, they are cleaning their hands of the deed A little water clears us of this deed. The wine she has drunk has made her brave, and she fixes Macbeths mistake by placing the bloodied daggers near the guards so that they are blamed for the murder. It seems as though the murder has had no effect on Lady Macbeth until she sees Duncans body, when the realisation of what they have done hits her and causes her to faint. This shows that the wine she had drunk and the fact that she had not yet seen what they had done caused her visage of carelessness. It is because of these actions by Macbeth and Lady Macbeth that we see that they are good people who would not usually commit such a crime.

Soon after the murder of Duncan, Macbeth and Lady Macbeths relationship begins to change. During the planning of the murder, Lady Macbeth is in charge, instructing her husband on what to do. After hiring the murderers to kill Banquo and Fleance, Macbeth tells his wife to Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck, till thou applaud the deed. showing that he is beginning to take control, plotting on his own and not even telling his wife what he is planning to do.

Where, before he was king, Macbeth was acting according to his ambition, by the beginning of Act III he is fighting for survival. He realises that he has come too far and killed too many people to turn back I am in blood stepped in so far, that, should I wade no more, returning were as tedious as go oer.

He has come to distrust everybody, especially Macduff, even to the point of hiring spies, and intend to kill any who get in his way Theres not a one of them, but in his house I keep a servant feed ... For mine own good all causes shall give way. Macbeth is worried about the consequences of his actions. He is afraid that nature will somehow find away to avenge the murders that he has committed It will have blood, they say; blood will have blood. Macbeth soon realises that, if the witches told the truth, then all that he fought for will go to Banquos sons instead of his own For Banquos issue have I filed my mind, for them the gracious Duncan have I murdered, put rancour in the vessel of my peace, only for them. This realisation frustrates Macbeth, and makes him even more determined to survive. Macduff leaving the country before he has a chance to kill him also frustrates him. If he is evil in this play at all, it is now, when he takes out these frustrations by having Macduffs family killed. Macbeth is no longer killing for entirely selfish reasons. He is now like a soldier, killing for survival and what he has fought for.

The last time that we see Lady Macbeth in command is at the banquet in Act III. In this scene, Lady Macbeth tries to protect and cover up for Macbeth by excusing his behaviour as a fit when Banquo’s ghost appears to him and he addresses it in terror. The next time we see her is in the beginning of the last Act, and she is far from the confident, calm person that we see in Act I. She has begun sleepwalking, and is obviously tormented by the murders that she has had part in. Earlier, she thought that a little water was all that was needed to wash her hands of Duncans blood, but, while sleepwalking, she thinks that her hands are covered in blood that cannot be removed Yet heres a spot…Out, damned spot! Out, I say! What, will these hands neer be clean? Here’s the smell of the blood still. All the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. By her behaviour, we see that Lady Macbeth is paying the penalty for the mistakes she helped to make. She was just trying to be a good wife by helping her husband receive what she believed he deserved. Her suffering is such that it leads to suicide, which shows that Lady Macbeth is not at all fiend-like. If she were, then the murders would have had no effect on her.

It is clear by their behaviour that Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are not evil. Lady Macbeths obvious suffering and regret, shown by her sleepwalking and suicide, and Macbeths fighting to his death, like the fearless soldier in the first Act, prove that Malcolms describing them as this dead butcher and his fiend-like queen is unfair and inaccurate.

Environment

The Fiji islands are situated in the South Pacific, midway between Melanesia (Solomons, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea) and Polynesia (Tonga, Samoa, the Cooks and French Polynesia). They are south of the equator, just north of the Tropic of Capricorn and west of the International Dateline. The territorial limits enclose an area of 1. million sq km (half a million sq mi), but only 1.5% of this is dry land. About 00 islands make up the nation.

Viti Levu at 10,0 sq km (405 sq mi), and Vanua Levu at 558 sq km (160 sq mi) are the biggest islands. Suva, the countrys capital is on the south-western coast of Viti Levu, and the island also has the countrys highest peak - Mt Tomanivi (Mt Victoria) at 1m (4ft). Taveuni and Kadavu are also substantial islands, but the rest of the country is made up of small islands divided into the Lomaiviti, Lau, Moala, Yasawa, Mamanuca and Rotuma groups. Many of these islands are relatively untouched and there are many beautiful reefs, lagoons, harbours, as well as natural vegetation.

Since the 160s, around 15% of the countrys forests have been cleared and erosion is a problem. Management of the environment has been poor, and pollution and waste continue to sully the waterways and lands around the urban areas, particularly around Suva. In some areas, fish consumption is a health hazard.

Of the 000-odd plant species identified on the Fiji islands, around one-third are endemic. Fijians developed uses for much of the native flora for food, medicine, dyes, implements and building materials. Around 500 years ago the first settlers brought poultry, dogs and pigs, and this coincided with the extinction of at least three of the indigenous bird species - two megapodes and a giant fruit pigeon. Bats are the only remaining indigenous land mammals but introduced animal species have taken to the local habitats with relish. Happy and established interlopers include the Indian mongoose (introduced to control rats in the sugar-cane plantations), feral dogs, cats, pigs, goats and rats. The 0 species of land-dwelling reptiles include turtles and sea-snakes, but the migration of the crested iguana from South America is a bit of a mystery. There are about 100 bird species, of which are native. Sea life is abundant and varied, and many species of coral, sponges, tropical reef fish, rays, sharks, dolphins and whales call the Fijian waters home (or call in on their way home).

Fiji enjoys a mild and stable climate most of the year, due to the large expanses of open water that surround its islands. The prevailing winds are easterly and south-easterly; the mountainous spines of the larger islands produce clouds and greater rainfall on their windward sides. The wet season extends from November to April, but rain falls throughout the year. Daytime temperatures average around 5°C (77°F), and humidity is generally high. Tropical cyclones can blow up between November and April, although they are rarely dangerous.

Getting There & Away

Centrally located in the mid-South Pacific, Fiji (along with Hawaii) is one of the main airline hubs of the region, and its well serviced by international carriers. From Fiji you can fly direct to anywhere around the Pacific Rim. Many people come on a round-the-world ticket or as a stopover between Australia or New Zealand and North America.

Although Suva is the capital, Nadi International Airport is where most travellers arrive and it is km (6mi) from the Nadi city centre. Nausori International Airport is Fijis second international airport, km (14mi) north-east of Suva and accessible by taxi. A US$.50 departure tax is levied on all international departees over the age of 1 years.

Getting to Fiji by sea nowadays is very difficult unless youre on a cruise boat or a private yacht. Fiji is a popular destination for yachties sailing around the South Pacific. Fijis designated ports of entry are Suva, Lautoka, Savusavu and Levuka; other marinas include Vuda Point Marina (between Nadi and Lautoka) and Musket Cove Marina on Plantation Island in the Mamanucas.

Getting Around

There are good transport connections in Fiji making internal travel easy and relatively inexpensive. Clearly, the most expensive way to travel between islands is by plane, and there are many domestic operators servicing all of the island groups, but unless youve got no time and heaps of money youre probably better off looking at ferries and small local boats.

Ferries are inexpensive, frequent, reliable and very seaworthy, and rubbing shoulders with the local people while travelling between islands is a pleasant and interesting part of the Fiji travel experience. Ferry routes connect most major coastal areas of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu with all the major islands. You can charter boats as well, or catch one of the smaller unscheduled local boats between islands (although the latter are best avoided in heavy seas).

The larger islands have good bus networks, and outside the towns you can often just hail down a bus wherever you see one. Express buses travel between major centres and local buses seem to stop at every village they pass, but by either means bus travel in Fiji is a pleasant way to meet local people and an effective way to get around.

My Twenty-One Years in the Fiji Islands, by Totaram Sanadhya, is an interesting first-hand account of the indenture system that brought so many Indians to the Fiji islands and changed the country for ever after. It was first written in 110, but has had several new editions since - its out of print at the moment, so its a bit hard to get hold of.

More general historical works include Fiji in the Pacific - A History and Geography of Fiji by Donnelly, Quanchi & Kerr (which is more of a school text than anything), Fiji Times - A History of Fiji by Kim Gravelle, and an interesting work called Beyond the Politics of Race, An Alternative History of Fiji to 1 by William Sutherland.

For some discussions about the first military coup and the post-coup era look for Power and Prejudice - The Making of the Fiji Crisis by Brij V Lal, More Letters from Fiji, 10-14, First Years Under a Post-Coup Constitution by Len Usher, and Rabuka - No Other Way by Eddie Dean and Stan Ritova.

A Lady (Mary Davis Wallis) penned Life in Feejee, or, Five Years Among the Cannibals way back in 1851 - its the memoirs of an American trading captain.

Fiji, by Daryl Tarte, is a trashy novel that is an easy read and covers a wide range of historical topics. The book covers over 100 years of Fijian history and looks at the experiences of a plantation family - its out of print at the moment.

Works by Fijian writers include Joseph Veramus short-story collection The Black Messiah and his novel about Suva teenagers called Moving Through the Streets, and Jo Nacolas play I Native No More.

Fiji Off the Beaten Track

By John Penisten

There are few places in all the South Pacific as alluring and inviting to visit as the sunny isles of Fiji which stradle the 180th meridian and where the new Millennium is slated to begin as dawn cracks that imaginary line come January 1, 000. Fiji is simply a fun place to visit. The warm and friendly nature of the islands mixed Indian and Fijian cultures combined with the tranquil tropical climate and beautiful countryside provide a relaxing, unhurried atmosphere. While Fijis visitor industry is centered on the main island of Viti Levu, the outer islands of this far-flung archipelago provide excellent accommodations and facilities for adventurous travelers of all types, from budget to luxury. And while Viti Levu is a great place to visit, the real Fiji awaits discovery in the outer islands, small towns and villages of this once British colonial outpost. For adventurous visitors who want to see and experience the real Fiji, its necessary to get-off-the-beaten-track. And two of the best places to discover the real Fiji are Savusavu and Levuka. Bula mai Viti!

Take an incredibly beautiful bay surrounded with rugged rain forest clad hills, add acres and acres of copra plantations, ageless Fijian villages, a languorous tropical ambience, general stores run mostly by Indians and Chinese, a colorful town market, a boat wharf, assorted government offices, and a town that appears to still have one foot in the 1th. century, and you have the essence of what Savusavu, Fiji is all about.

It bills itself (thanks to the local Savusavu Jaycees Club anyway) as Fijis Hidden Paradise. The town has a charming, unassuming character totally in tune with its isolated off-the-beaten-track location. Savusavu, the provincial center of Cakaudrove Province, is located on the southeast peninsula of Vanua Levu, Fijis second largest island.

The locals have an unpretentious and detached attitude toward visitors and the outside world in general. I arrived on a late Sunday afternoon at the small, little-used Savusavu Airport, a mere swath through the coconut trees. I was one of just a handful of passengers on the small Sunflower Airlines plane from Nadi International Airport on Viti Levu.

But mass tourism its not and its still a pretty quiet, laid-back country place. The town and surrounding environs have only a handful of small resorts and inns. One of the more noted is the scuba-dive eco-tourism oriented and pricey Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort just outside the town proper.

In town are the more moderate Hot Springs Hotel and other budget guesthouses and backpacker inns. Savusavu Bay is not known for white sandy beaches. Its shores are covered with thick mangrove swamps and muddy flats.

There are some fine beaches for swimming and snorkeling, however you will need some local transportation as they are anywhere from 4-5 miles out of town. Nukubalavu (which means long sand in Fijian) is near the airport and has a nice sandy beach. Just west of Nukubalavu is Lesiaceva Point which also has a nice sandy beach area.

The point is at the end of the peninsula south of town and is next to the Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort. Other activities that visitors can enjoy are mountain biking, sailing, ocean kayaking, waterfall and rain forest hikes, and visits to local villages are easily arranged. Volcanic hot springs still seep and steam along the bayshore.

One small spring is located just below the Hot Springs Hotel (thus its name). The Hibiscus Highway extends some 40 miles eastward from Savusavu to Buca Bay. Its a scenic day excursion drive through copra plantations, virgin rain forest country, and along meandering coastline with several Fijian villages en route as well. Vanua Levus terrain consists of lush green jungle-clad hills and a mountainous interior.

From Buca Bay, boats can be hired for excursions over to Taveuni Island or even stops at Kioa. Another easy day excursion from Savusavu is the drive over to Labasa on the far west side of Vanua Levu. Its 60 miles from Savusavu to Labasa, about a .5/-hour ride by car or bus over the mountains.
