What is the significance of the beast?

The beast in William Golding's novel, The Lord of the Flies, is of much significance. The beast is seen as an actual creature that the boys are afraid of, as seen in the comment "He says he saw the beastie." This comment about the beast causes the reader to wonder if the beast is real. In reality though, the beast is made up of the inner fears that the boys have. The boys become so carried away with their fears that they allow themselves to get caught up in the disorder of a society that does not have any adults. An example of how the boys become carried away with their fears is when Ralph calls a meeting, and everyone votes that there should be a signal fire. Instead of waiting for direction from Ralph, all of the boys take off up the mountain and gather supplies for a fire. They make a pile that is much too big and end up starting a forest fire. As seen in the following citation, the boys are irresponsible and do not consider the consequences to their actions, "Now you been and set the whole island on fire. Won't we look funny if the whole island burns up?" This quote shows how the boys are careless, and lack the insight to see how their actions might affect them. The above examples are why the beast in William Golding's novel, The Lord of the Flies, is of so much importance.
