Shakespeares Hamlet Ned Kraemer Nov.1, 18 Brit. Lit. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Hamlet discloses his true feelings, in Act 4, scene 4. In this soliloquy, Hamlet illustrates his mental instability by contrasting himself and Fortinbras. He illustrates himself as being a coward who does not has the will to initiate plans to revenge his father’s death. Hamlet finds himself grasping for an answer as whether to kill his uncle who has done his family and great injustice by killing his father and sleeping with the mother. This outrages Hamlet and creates an inner struggle and it is in this stage where Hamlet idealizes Fortinbras in his words and actions. In Hamlet’s soliloquy, He contrasts the differences between Fortinbras and himself, and implying his desire to be more like Fortinbras in action. Hamlet admires Fortinbras for the mere fact that he is the head of state and he is control of a powerful army, while Hamlet can barely control himself. Fortinbras holds a position that Hamlet was destined for, yet Claudius intervened and took Hamlet’s rightful position. This fact may imply that Hamlet sees his father’s actions personified in Fortinbras. Although Hamlet seems to admire the dominance and will power that Fortinbras displays, he also criticizes him and his unattainable dream. “ The imminent death of twenty thousand men that for fantasy and trick of fame.” In this statement Hamlet is declaring that he thinks Fortinbras quest is meaningless and therefore deems it foolish. He is also compromising Fortinbras basic ability to reason. Throughout the play, Hamlets wishes that he could take actions and avenge his father’s death, but in this soliloquy he also states that he believes Fortinbras reasoning to be skewed. He believes that the actions of Fortinbras are incredibly simplistic and thus feels superior in this manner. Hamlet admires those who ca use their intelligence to its capacity and then act upon it, yet he sees those actions of Fortinbras as primal urges to survive. While he ridicules Fortinbras for the lack of judgement he also realizes that by his power to reason stems his suffering. Hamlet is tormented by the fact that he completely takes into account all aspects of the situation before acting upon his urge to avenge his father’s death. This is why he believes that he cannot go through with the murder of his uncle, Claudius. As many other soliloquies do, this soliloquy portrays Hamlet as the coward who cannot act for the revenge of his father and his family honor. Though his convictions against Claudius and his misdeeds towards his family are vented through irate outbursts and seem to be firmly rooted, there still is a battle within Hamlet. This self-devaluation of opinion continues throughout the play and eventually leads to his mother’s death. It is only at this moment where Hamlet has no inner struggle and sees the actions that he must take to bring inner peace. Even when Hamlet had an opportunity to kill Claudius while he is praying he suppresses his rage with an excuse that he wishes for Claudius to acknowledge his wrongdoing. Fortinbras is a catalyst of this play and that is illustrated through Hamlet’s soliloquy. Hamlet sees his decisive actions and comes to believe that the situation with Claudius must be terminated immediately. I believe that without the ever present Fortinbras Hamlet would have mulled over his decision and taken no action at all. Fortinbras influenced Hamlet in his decision that Claudius must be taken care of immediately no matter what the cost.

Nike throughout its years of success has had its ups and downs. The company has either been sued, or throughout the years the competition has been getting stronger and stronger.

Nike Inc. has expensive endorsement contracts with star athletes in order to dominate the entire athletic footwear business. By doing so it makes fans like myself want to go out and get the shoes. In 18 the giant footwear and apparel company was being hurt by the Asian economic slowdown, criticism of working conditions in the company’s overseas factories and savvy marketing thrusts by competing brands such as Adidas. Adidas has used its European clout to build bridges to soccer, the world’s fastest-growing sport. And the German company had signaled its intent to challenge Nike on its own turf, possibly by signing an endorsement deal with a National Football League team. Nike has recognized the need for change in its marketing and in its product lines. For a period of time Nike had gotten very sloppy. But now they are starting to show some new technologies, sharper pricing and an understanding of the need to segment their products to combat market saturation.

In 1, Nike’s profit in its second quarter had risen 50 percent as foreign sales helped the athletic footwear and apparel company exceed analyst expectations. Nike said that its net income rose to $107.5 million, or 8 cents to a dulled share, from $68. million, or 4 cents a share a year earlier. Nike’s president Thomas Clarke said, “We’re very focused on getting the top line growing again and this past quarter we did that for the first time in two years.” Nike said that the athletic footwear revenue in the United States rose percent, to $7. million, but that athletic apparel revenue fell 10 percent, to $0 million. European revenue rose 1 percent, to $404.7 million, according to the company, while revenue in the Asian-Pacific region jumped percent, to $4.6 million.

Nike also has stumbled in recent years when it comes to reaching younger consumers. The company got a black eye in the mid-10’s when it tried to use its considerable advertising might to bull its way into the extreme sports market. Some marketers point to Nike’s size and largely successful heritage as part of its problem. Nike has faced an uphill ride in snowboarding. With $8. billion in worldwide revenue, the shoe and apparel company dwarfs the entire snowboard industry. But Nike never fulfilled its plan to market a Nike snowboard line. In September 000, Nike filled the Great Western Forum with 40 tons of snow, dozens of top riders, and rapper Eminem for a daylong party. In addition to polishing Nike’s image in Southern California, the local marketing team hopes to uncover trends breaking in a sports rich environment that uncorporates basketball and baseball as well as in-line skating, motorcross, snowboarding, and jet ski riding.

In the year 000, analysts had expected Nike to post earnings of 74 cents a share, according to First Call/ Thomson Financial. Nike was off to a very good start for the fiscal year with accelerating revenue growth and increasing profitability. The weakness in the Euro put pressure on Nike’s profitability, although it was able to meet its goals.

The bloodshed, the glory and triumph, the birth of a nation. These were all direct results of the American Revolutionary War, which itself had officially begun upon the first shots fired by the British army at Lexington and Concord. After these initial shootings, a number of battles were fought to preserve the colonists’ freedom from tyrannical England. The climax of the war occurred along the fields of Yorktown, Virginia, where a battle between the colonists and the British was brewing. Entering the battle, the British forces believed that they clearly possessed the upper hand against the insubordinate, rag-tag rebel army. But as time wore on and the battles drew to a close, the history books would address the outcome of the Battle of Yorktown in the following manner that over-confidence in their military knowledge and tactics proved to be England’s undoing at the Battle of Yorktown, one of that nation’s greatest war-time blunders.

The British Army stationed in the colonies was under the command of Lieutenant General George Cornwallis, who himself had defeated the Americans forces on numerous occasions in battles occurring in the northern colonies. An order was sent from those back in England for General Cornwallis to move the British soldiers within his command toward the southern colonies.

The colonial forces led by that of General George Washington, assisted by General Marquis De Lafayette, General Rochambeau, and Admiral de Grasse along with their 17,000 men launched the battle that would bring England to its knees. Before he could even fathom the dangers that lay ahead, British General Lord Cornwallis engaged himself and his men in a battle he could not possibly triumph. However, planning the course of the attack for the French-American army was not an easy task to execute. Nevertheless, the battle might not have been won if it was not for the assistance of the French navy.

Initially, British General Lord Cornwallis had ignited rage throughout the Carolinas. He fought these battles and won, without so much as a doubt in his opponents’ minds; however, his army was becoming weaker every battle without him realizing it. On the weeks that followed in the year 1781, British General Henry Clinton ordered Lord Cornwallis to stay in the Carolinas and support British troops there. General Cornwallis decided not to follow the order, and so he moved his whole army to Yorktown, Virginia. At General Cornwallis’s arrival at Yorktown, Cornwallis took command from British General Benedict Arnold. While at Yorktown, The British troops were short on reinforcements and supplies. A battle including General Washington’s troops was to occur in New York City at the same time, so no reinforcements were sent to General Cornwallis’s aid. General Cornwallis was ordered again to march all his troops to New York, however, once again he disobeyed orders and he and his 7,500 men remained encamped at Yorktown.

While General George Washington and General Rochambeau commanded the Franco-American forces in the north, General Lafayette gave the word to Washington that General Cornwallis and his troops were stationed at Yorktown. No one expected for General Washington and his troops to march southward, they had no reason to. To conceal Washington’s plans of heading south towards Cornwallis, he stationed ,500 of his soldiers in American forts near the city of New York. While at night, General Washington and General Rochambeau quietly moved from the forts and begun to head south.

Upon their arrival at Yorktown, Generals Washington, Rochambeau, and Lafayette began to plan the attack. They gave word to French Admiral de Grasse to station in the West Indies and later sail towards Chesapeake Bay and take control of the York River to block Cornwallis’s escape route to the sea. Both, General Washington’s and General Rochambeau’s forces formed a semi circle around the city. Now, Lord Cornwallis had no way of fleeing. “The French-American forces added up to about 17,000 men, that is far more than the 7,500 men General Cornwallis had stationed in the city.” (Leckie 0)

Before the fighting had even begun, things were going downhill for the British armed forces. Cornwallis had 8,800 troops and 1,000 freed slaves but, ,000 of the aforementioned men were ill. The Americans had 8,00 Continental Army troops, and 7,500 French troops under their command. Additionally, there were an extra 4,000 sailors on board the French ships supporting the colonial movement. (Dupuy 76)

General Cornwallis had requested that fellow British commander General Henry Clinton send a warship filled with British troops from New York to rally to his aid at Yorktown. After receiving this order, Clinton could not make up his mind as whether or not to obey in the event that the soldiers under his command were attacked by Washington’s troops whom he reasoned were still camped in New York. This dispute left Cornwallis’s troops severely undermanned for the pending battle ahead.

At Yorktown, Cornwallis decided to make a square half mile fort around his headquarters to protect his troops and to fortify a defense against the rebel army. The inner defenses were strong, but as the British were low in tools and supplies, they were unable to fully complete the perimeter.

On September 8, the allies began their march to Yorktown. They planned a siege of the fort, whereas a direct attack would result in far too numerous casualties. The French were masters at siege warfare, as was Baron Von Steuben, a Prussian General who too was assisting the American army. Since the Americans possessed no experience in the area of siege warfare, the French and Prussians instructed them on how to dig zig-zag trenches through the fields to which artillery could be brought closer to the British stronghold. This maneuver would allow the allies to weaken the fort’s defenses before an open attack. In addition, the colonial forces were deployed in a semi-circle about 6 miles long around the fort’s perimeter. Upon sight of this, Cornwallis started to panic as he was severely undermanned. He attempted to escape by transporting his men across the nearby river to Gloucester Point. But the American defense lines, and the impeccable timing of bad weather, prevented the escape. As the colonists and the British began to make their attack on the British, the walls of the British fort started to crumble.

As the battle wore on, the American and French forces took up siege positions before Yorktown. On October th, a large artillery barrage led the attack, with General Washington himself touching off the Americans first cannon shot. The Allied bombardment continued without letup, battering the British positions with devastating results. (Lumpkin 7)

Unbeknownst to Cornwallis, French Admiral Count de Grasse was sailing in full force from Haiti with a powerful fleet of twenty-eight heavy warships. When de Grasse arrived, he imposed a blockade on Chesapeake Bay and the mouths of the James and York Rivers. This bold and daring military action prevented Cornwallis’s land forces from making their escape out of the city.

Finally, on October 17th, the British sent a fleet from New York to help General Cornwallis and his men, but by that time it was far too late. The British were outnumbered and were greatly deprived of hardly any food. Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Hamilton had delivered a letter from General Washington to General Cornwallis. “Washington wrote that he wanted to stop the useless effusion of blood. (Dupuy 7) On the same day the British fleet left New York, General Cornwallis realized there was no hope for his army and sent this answer to General Washingtons letter

York in Virginia,

17th October 1781,

1/ PAST 4 P.M.

Sir,

I have this moment been honoured with your Excellencys letter dated this day. The time limited for sending my answer will not admit of entering into the detail of Articles, but the basis of my proposals will be that the Garrisons of York and Gloucester shall be prisoners of War with the customary honors, and for the convenience of the individuals which I have the honor to command, that the British shall be sent to Britain and the Germans to Germany, under engagement not to serve against France, America or their Allies until released or regularly exchanged, that all Arms and public stores shall be delivered up to you, but that the usual indulgence of side arms to Officers and of retaining private property shall be granted to Officers and Soldiers, and that the interests of several individuals in Civil Capacities and connected with us, shall be attended to. If Your Excellency thinks that a continuance of the suspension of hostilities will be necessary to transmit your answer I shall have no objection to the hour that you propose. I have the honor to be

Your most obedient and most humble servant,

Cornwallis (Dupuy 80)

On October 18, with the British ammunition exhausted, the figure of a red-coated drummer boy appeared on a British fieldwork on Hampton Road. The Allied guns went silent, as a British officer emerged holding up a white handkerchief, sent to General Washington to end the three weeks of siege. The British messenger also told Washington that General Cornwallis wished for a truce followed by a full surrender. Cornwallis army surrendered as Prisoners of War, with only the senior officers accepted on parole and returned to England.

“The Americans forced the British out of the fort, demanding that the British bring their colors. The British played “The World Turned Upside Down” while leaving their stations at Yorktown.” (Encarta) At p.m. on October 1th, the British ranks marched down the Hampton Road lined on both sides with French and American soldiers. Cornwallis did not surrender in person but, instead, had his second in command, General Charles OHara lead the column of British soldiers. Cornwallis later claimed to be inside the fort very sick. At first the British tried to surrender to the French, as they were overly embarrassed and did not wish to admit defeat to the rebel army. The French did not allow this and insisted that the British surrender to the Americans. O’Hara attempted to give Washington Cornwallis’s sword. Washington refused to accept the sword from Cornwallis’s second in command. He instead made the British surrender to the American second in command, General Benjamin Lincoln.

Once Cornwallis decided to surrender, he had no alternative but to accept General Washingtons terms. These were, on the whole, not only just, but rather extremely generous. “The British army was to surrender to the Americans; the navy to the French. Officers were to retain their side arms and private property; soldiers were to be kept in Virginia, Maryland or Pennsylvania; Cornwallis and some other officers were permitted to return home to England on parole.” (Mitchell 10)

A New Jersey officer reported that . . . the British officers in general behaved like boys who had been whipped at school. Some bit their lips; some pouted; others cried. Their round, broad-rimmed hats were well-adapted to the occasion, hiding those faces they were ashamed to show. (Mitchell 110)

When word of the surrender reached London, the Prime Minister, Lord Frederick North, resigned. Parliament heard of the surrender and it decided England had been beaten. They instructed the King to make peace with the colonists. The colonies were given to the Americans, which allowed the colonists to form their own government. Following the surrender, General Cornwallis sailed to the West Indies to fight the Spanish who were trying to capture Jamaica from the British. “Admiral de Grasse was captured by the British and held in prison in England. After the surrender, he was released to France, but his remarkable contribution to the victory at Yorktown was all but forgotten as he retired from the navy. General Rochambeau received high honors from the French king and he continued to serve in the French army into his later years. General Washington retired from the army after the War, but was later named the first President of the United States in 178.” (World Book)

After reviewing the actions and outcomes of the Battle of Yorktown, the French and the Americans won the war for a number of reasons First, the British were fighting ,000 miles from home. This meant it would take a long period of time for supplies or money to be sent to America. The American patriots received invaluable aid from France in the form of money, warships, cannons, ammunition, and other supplies. Most importantly, however, the French taught the colonists battle strategies that helped lead to the defeat of the British. The motive behind the actions of the American troops became greater as they further overtook the British. They were fighting for a new country, in addition to a new beginning. The British soldiers on the other hand were led by General Cornwallis who was not nearly as successful as a leader has he had been in past encounters with the colonials. The British army was fighting far from home to preserve the colonies for the English crown. Their morale was not nearly as strong as the colonist’s.

But after the passing of some two hundred years since the last bullet shot out of a rifle on the bloody fields of Yorktown, Virginia, the results of the Battle of Yorktown state the obvious; that the British, plainly and effectively using their own massive egos and lack of military skill, messed up big time in securing what should easily have been a British victory in the American Revolutionary War. Italianate Style

Residence

1 Isabella St. Perth

The Italianate style emerged in the 180s. It outlasted other emerging styles of the time like Gothic Revival, until the 1870s. This style can be defined by things like square towers, asymmetrical plans, broad roofs, large verandas, round or segmentally arched windows, ornate brick work, foliate brackets, double doors, two over two double hung sash windows, and polychromatic brickwork.

The building I have chosen is the Italianate style, but on a symmetrical Georgian frame.

The first thing I notice about this building is the column support triangular pediment followed by the double semi-circular sash windows below the semi-circular headed louvre which is contained by a open triangular pediment. The overall effect of all these elements stacked upon each other is quite striking.

The tin roof is truncated hip, with three chimneys. The overhang appears to be supported by brackets and dental work.

The brickwork of the building shows a tasteful mastery. The double projection belt course which flows into segmentally and semi-circular headed arches is amazing. Below the center windows on the second floor is some recessed brick, followed by a belt course of diagonally placed brick. This is pure Italianate brick style.

Lights are in four distinct categories A small louvre opening, two over two double hung sash windows, single sash windows, four over four double hung sash windows, and finally two clones of the louvre with glass in the doors. The bounced bay windows which mirror the wood detailing on the roof are not normally associated with this style, but do look good.

The doors are framed by nice woodwork on a classical veranda.

Queen Anne Style

Residence

0 North St. Perth

The Queen Anne style emerged in 1876 at an exhibition in Philadelphia. This styles defining characteristics were the bay windows, projecting oriels, broken up roof lines, cut and molded brickwork, terracotta, and general decorative excess. The floor plan was usually an L shape with a veranda. Towers and spindles were also not uncommon on this style of building, although less popular in Canada. The roofs were usually steep and hipped, with tall chimneys.

This building exhibits features of a Vernacular Queen Anne building. The open pediment at the top of the bay window and the triangular pediment on the portico are both elements of this style, as well as containing the sunburst pattern, which is very predominant in all Queen Anne pediment detailing.

The two story bay window is an excellent example of a psuedo-tower, as many Queen Anne structures do contain a tower.

Segmentally headed arches and stone lintels on the openings is opulent touch to the building.

Second Empire

Residence

6 Drummond St. Perth

This styles most striking feature is the mansard roof, named after Monsieur Mansard, architect to Louis XIV (R.A.J. Phillips, 176). The roof had slate shingles commonly, often containing colored patterns and placed diagonally. Iron cresting was not an uncommon addition to the roof line. Clapboard siding was common, as well as brick. Second Empire is much like Victorian in its oppulent ornamentation. Towers were common, though not serving any real purpose. Pedimented, and pitch roofed dormers were used to light the attic or tower. The openings are all framed in ornate woodwork and possess classical elements to a degree with segmentally, or semi-circular arches. Windows were either two over two double hung sash windows, or one over one. Bay windows were also an option for the architect. Double doors were the standard for this style, with a transom light above. A veranda is a standard feature, almost always containing ornate wooden bracketing.

This building contains all the most distinct Second Empire features with its mansard roof and two mock towers. The pedimented dormers on the attic are a distinguishing characteristic. There is also a shed roof dormer in the middle and a semi circular pediment on the back right side.

The elaborate projecting and recessing brickwork, the modest cornice and the wooden detailing on the veranda are all characteristics of Second Empire.

The bay windows contain segmentally headed arches containg four over four double hung sash windows. The middle of the second story contains a semi-circular headed light which is also appropriate.

The use of white trim as a unifying decorative element is what brings the style of this house together and makes it Second Empire. This white trim is on every window, on the veranda and most strikingly, on the roof lines, showing us the angles of the mansard.

Edwardian Style

Residence

6 Alexander St. Perth

This style is a Post-Victorian type of architecture. It is usually red brick in an L layout. The most striking feature is the lack of ornamentation framing very pleasing proportions. Although some classical elements may be included the brickwork is simple and clean. There is an emphasis on the cornice throughout the building.

This building is a good example because its a Victorian structure stripped of its pretentious decoration.

Although it has rectangular shape, this building is not symetrical. The entrance is on the right side in the form of a mock veranda. This is keeping with the style of less is more. The enclosed brick front porch with its large band of single pane windows is a classic Edwardian feature, as is the truncated hip roof.

We have six over six double hung sash windows in a simple wooden frame that is totally Edwardian. Also the hipped dormer containg three lights could be found on any post-Victorian building and is a simple elegant feature.

The mock veranda with two columns and two pilasters is very Edwardian, as these buildings always contained a classical reference.

Art Moderne Style

Commercial

8 Gore St. Perth

This style was very popular in the 10s. It can be said to have a horizontal emphasis, in a cube or rectangular shape. Crisp lines, with large windows, and a flat roof, this style seemed to come from the future. There is little to no ornamentation and the window and door frames are usually steel or aluminum. Ashlar stone in lighter tones is the preferred building material. It also contains pure classical elements at times, as it originated in the Bauhaus movement. This building style was so popular it changed the design of everything from jewelry to appliances of the time.

This downtown Perth structure exemplifies all the features of Art Moderne.

The horizontally emphasized shape, the minimal classical touches, large windows and crisp lines are all elements of this style.

The flat roof is essential to any Art Moderne building, and this structure has just that. As well there is a peaked fa├žade with such a shallow peak it further emphasizes the horizontal dimension.

The simple clean carving at the top is another natural extension of this style. Unlike Art Deco which would contain decorative carvings, this building contains essential structure information.

The broad suggested entablature with its large cornice is a classical element incorporated into this building, within the ashlar stone. This leads the eye to the suggested columns that are holding it up. These stone pilasters are large and distinct but camouflaged into the building, not breaking up its clean modern look, but accentuating it.

The large one over one double hung sash windows give the building a lighter look. The mirrored entrance on either side of the building is indicative of the style. Although symmetry is not essential to this style, it usually is used to balance and define Art Moderne commercial buildings, residential is another matter. These entryways have bracketed hoods accentuating them, which is fitting with this style.

RIAA v. Verizon (Copyright Law)

A copyright is an intangible property right granted by federal statute to the author or the originator of the artistic production of a specified type, and is protected by the Copyright Act of 176. Copyrighted material falls into the categories of literary works, musical works, dramatic works, choreographed works, pictorial or graphic works, films and audiovisual works, and sound recordings. Copyright law does protect song lyrics and thus the song itself. If the lyrics are copied, sold, or distributed without the authorization of the owners of the copyright, copyright infringement has occurred. According to Section 10 of the Copyright Act of 176, original expression cannot be copyrighted but the particular way the expression is presented can be copyrighted. This would include both the lyrics of a song as well as the tune and the presentation. Although songs are publicly played on the radio and on television, stations must pay a royalty to the record company/artist to play those songs. This protects them from copyright infringement. In such cases as RIAA v. Verizon, the question of copyright infringement was never the issue. By trading the songs between users of such services as KaZaA, users violated the protective services provided by the copyrights of the music they shared. The issue in this case was whether or not the motion to subpoena the name of the person who was breaking the copyright law from Verizon was legal, whether or not that person had a right to privacy through his contract with Verizon, and whether or not the basis for the findings of the court were sound. With regards to the rights of the RIAA to subpoena the name from Verizon, the court found that under DMEA of 18, the RIAA could indeed subpoena Verizon. Having read the case and the necessary articles of the DMEA, there is little doubt in my mind that Verizon would have been discluded from the responsibilities set forth in the Act. With regards to the users right to privacy, one must be aware that any use of the Internet automatically makes personal information public. Many people believe that privacy and security software, etcetera, protects their private information, however it does not. Once a person enters information into a computer and sends it out across the Internet, regardless of whom the end recipient is, the information is available for anyone with a little computer savvy to see. Also, the user of Verizon’s services was not in any danger of economic downfall, persecution, or ridicule by maintaining his anonymity. Between these two factors, this person’s privacy is not protected. Finally, with regards to the findings of the court, I do believe that the plaintiff more than satisfied the conditions necessary to prove that Verizon had failed to comply with the laws as set forth under the DMEA and that Verizon’s client was not afforded the right to privacy under the First Amendment as had been claimed by the defense.

While I do not agree with the ideas set forth by the RIAA, I do agree with the elements of the law, which protect these ideas. It has been proven time and again that peer-to-peer file sharing has done more to help the recording industry that to hurt it and that overall profits of recording artists and companies were highest when file sharing was not under attack (as in the case of RIAA v. Napster). I believe that the RIAA would benefit from embracing the technological advances that make such things as file sharing possible rather than shooting themselves in the foot by fighting change.

All societies have their own unique folktales and fairytales. They are the true mirror of the people because they are personal and are passed down from one generation to another verbally. Mothers tell them to their children at bedtime, entertaining them while at the same time teaching them important principles and lesson that they will need later on in life. The stories differ in many ways, but all express the moral and ethical belief of the culture that spawned them. “Green Willow,” the Japanese folktale, and “The White Snake,” a German Brothers Grimm fairytale are two such tales that share many things in common while also being different in many ways.

Most interesting are the parallels of these two narratives that exist in the most prominent features of the storyline because even when coming from widely different backgrounds, people can always find something to agree about. For instance, both tales start out in the same general fashion the main character is introduced as a servant for a Lord who embarks on an unspecified quest into the wilderness; one is named Tomotada, while the second is only referred to as “the servant”. This is characteristic of fairytales as they usually have some run-of-the-mill person embark on a grand journey of exploration. Commoners, the ones who have created these tales, find it inspiring and a good lesson for their children to learn, that they do not have to be rich and powerful to succeed in life. In addition, over the course of their journeys, both heroes come upon a beautiful maiden and resolve to marry her. They are struck by her beauty as well as her grace and poise. A beautiful woman is often the motivating factor in a folk hero’s quest as he tries to win her favor and her hand in marriage. Such parallels in the storyline are considered classic and appear in most folktales from around the world.

However, because these stories came from two widely different cultures, they are also different in many ways. The Japanese folktale’s hero battles against himself in an almost completely inner conflict about betraying his Lord, while the Brothers Grimm fairytale concentrates on the hero winning against the odds, because of his kindness, in an outer conflict. Obviously, the Japanese tale was written to make the reader think about the concepts of honor and love, and how powerful they both are. The fairytale was written for a more simplistic reason, that of entertainment, and to show the power of nature, so it does not have as much of a philosophical moral. Similarly, the latter saga ends with the traditional fairytale ending of “and then her heart became full of love for him, and they lived in undisturbed happiness to a great age,” (Grimm 7) while the other gives a more pessimistic view of life, ending in tragedy the death of Tomotada’s love. Although both have nearly the same moral of being kind to nature, the first story rewards the hero for his adhering to this maxim, while the second punishes the hero for mankind’s disregard of it. Nevertheless, for their audiences and topics, both stories manage to perform their function quite well. It is these differences, which, if studied closely, can reveal many important characteristics of their civilization.

Folk and fairy tales are an important and unique part of every culture. They are what shaped and molded the children of that culture for countless generations and hold in them their fundamental morals and values. Just as every individual person is unique and at the same time a lot like any other, the tales of any one culture are unique, but also similar in many ways to any other. “Green Willow” and “The White Snake” are no exception and teach many of the same and different lessons that everyone should take to heart.

Ever since humankind has walked on Earth women have been looked down upon ,because it has always been imprinted in everyones mind that men are superior then women. In this case, the stereotyping of women is in the business enviornment has greatly affected the job offerings given to women from the past to possibly the future. Women have been giving high ranking managerial jobs as of now, but only a certain percentage have made it as far as CEOs for big companies. This is do to pure fact of the Glass Ceiling, which is a business metaphor used to describe the way a woman can reach a certain level in a company and she could see beyond the level into a higher rank but she can never reach of acheive it. However, why is his phenomenon growing stronger? That is what I want to find out. I researched mostly on the internet and in the library to find out the factors leading towards the Glass Ceiling is not only do to the stereotyping of woman but also woman themselves and also their strategy in becoming a good manager. As stated by Katherine Bontrager, the staff writer for The Journal in Kansas City, the number of women-run business has increased.

As of 00, women-owned firms numbered 6. million(The Business Journal, page 1), meaning that we as women can make it in the business world, but the question is still at large, Can we over come the Glass Ceiling? Going through my research and seeing professional opinions on the Glass Ceiling has really opened my eyes and changed my attitude towards the way I look at the Glass Ceiling and how it came about. I would like have said that the only reason that the Glass Ceiling is, till this day, affecting women is because of the men in the organizations. But as I began my research and start reading up on some other factors leading towards the subject I began to see that women play a major role in the affects of the Glass Ceiling.

People are willing to hiring men as opposed to women because they do not get pregnant and ask for maternity leaf, now will companies have a problem getiing married and having to quit. Organizations look for someone who is strong enough to keep their game face on, so to speak, a strong individual who can be professional and also aggresive at the same time, these type of charcteristics are hard to find in a woman but are easier to look for in a man. As the business aspect looks at the situation, you are better of being secure that the person you hire is going to be there for a while, rather than trying to figure out what is going to happen in the future. So it is clear to me that women do attribute many factors to the Glass Ceiling, and even though I am a woman myself there are times wehn you have to think with your business mind rahter than trying to be fair. The also plays a major role in the Glass Ceiling , from the Freedom Riders to the Civil Rights Act, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, and national origin. Katherine Bontrager alson found that, Hispanic women are three more times more likely to start a business than any other ethnic groups (The Business Journal, page 1), But how can this be? This is due to the great amount of migration of 00, ethnic groups of the same kind themselves creating a strong business because they sell goods that they used to get in their country and keep the same customers, it just so happens that a mass majority of those companies are owned by women. Although the conclusion may lead to be that the Glass Ceiling still and will always exist, but I believe that the strong women of this new generation will change everyones thoughts of the Glass Ceiling. Bontrager, Katherine. Women, minorities make progress but have miles to go before they reap. The Business Journal, OCtober 00 1-

There I was putting price on the new shipment that had just come in earlier that day when I was suddenly stunned by what I saw. I put my head up and dropped whatever I was doing to see these three girls walk in MY STORE in nothing but bathing suits. They were wearing no shoes, no shirts, no pants, NOTHING. Nothing but there bathing suits. They weren’t even wearing their bathing suits properly. This one girl, who looked like the leader of the pack, was wearing the straps of her bathing suits on her shoulders. These girls looked like slobs and they had some nerve coming into my store looking like that.

The day before today, I had put a sign in the front window of the store that said that all people coming into the store must be wearing shirts, shoes, and pants. They obviously didn’t see the sign or they saw it and didn’t bother to acknowledge it. At first I let it slide, because I thought they were only going to be shopping for a short time, maybe picking up one or two items for the beach. These girls then had the nerve to continue walking around my store looking the way they did. I tried to hold my composure and not worry about it, but I knew that if I let this slide, it s going to give my store a bad name and it will be bad for business.

So I finally went up to them and said something. I told them that they would either had to leave now or pay for whatever they had with them and leave. I told them that their was a sign in the window and they told me they didn’t see it. I knew they were lying right through their teeth. The leader of the pack was giving me dirty looks, and the other girls did whatever she did so they followed and started giving me dirty looks. I wasn’t in the mood to tolerate this, so I told them they would have to leave right away and not come back until they knew how to dress in my store.

In Hrotsvitha’s “Paphnutius,” we begin our story when we are introduced to

Paphnutius and Thias. Thias is a woman that we can refer to as a harlot. She brings great

dismay into Paphnutius’ life. His dismay is brought by the fact that she is exchanging

herself in the return of gifts from young men. Paphnutius is severely bothered by Thias

so he decides to venture to her and try to get her to turn her life around. Thias meets

Paphnutius but does not know she has. He disguised himself as a suitor for her and then

he finally revealed his identity. Thias feels terrible about her past and she repents to

Paphnutius about all the things that she has been doing wrong. Paphnutius explains to

her that she must pay for her sins so he takes her to a nunnery. For Thias’ sins, she is

sent to a cell for three years in order to cleanse her fully of her choices from the past.

After three years Paphnutius returns for Thias and she is free to go, but the shocking part

of this story is how Thias, after she has repented she is still doomed. The story cuts to

Thias dying in the presence of Paphnutius. The story doesn’t give much indication why,

but it leaves the audience a little unsure of how or why.

In Hrotsvitha’s work, she describes a story that relates back to Medieval

Imitation. Thias repented her sins in the hope to find a sense of security in a new life

where she will follow God. Thias goes to the nunnery so willingly in the fact she

believes things will turn themselves around. This play leaves the audience under the

impression that because Thias repented, she will now have everlasting life in the

Kingdom of God. Hrotsvitha seems to want her audience to believe that if you repent,

like Thias, you will have a wonderful life; but, if you don’t you will have a long

treacherous life. Hrotsvitha combines theater, theology, and imitation to display the mere

fact that what’s done in one’s life will result in their afterlife. If someone lives their life

under the shadow’s of God they will have a joyous life in heaven, but if not they will live

in the evilness of hell for the rest of their being.

Introduction

The Historical Origins of Companyism From Westernization to Indigenization

BANNO JUNJI

During the 180s bubble economy, social scientists in Japan and elsewhere showed great interest in Japanese-style management and Japanese-style administration. Although the bubble has burst, this interest persists. Now, however, instead of praise, the formerly admired patterns are subject to criticism.

An important theme in investigations into Japanese-style management has been the effort to uncover the historical origins of the system. Given the severe economic problems of the first postwar decade, it is not surprising that scholars initially tended to look back to the prewar Showa period. The following statement made in 15 by the well-known economist Takahashi Kamekichi explains this tendency

Japans capital accumulation decreased greatly as a result of wartime waste. At present it has sunk to levels as low as the Meiji period. . . . Unfortunately, many of the countrys present financial, administrative, and political leaders are people who established their careers during the prewar period when Japans economy peaked. They have no experience with poverty and, therefore, do not know how to cope with it. This is one of the most serious problems in present Japan. 1

Takahashis assessment of the prewar economy may be difficult to accept for Japanese who grew up being taught that prewar capitalism was very undeveloped. It also flies in the face of the frequently expressed notion that Japans aggressive actions in Asia were a result of domestic poverty. Nevertheless, according to Takahashi, the Sino-Japanese War broke out in 17 when the Japanese economy was at its highest point. This view was endorsed by the famous White Paper on the Economy published in 156, in which the following assessment appeared

In fiscal year 155 the Japanese economy exceeded prewar standards in all areas except trade. Real national income was 11 per cent of the average of the three years from 14 to 16. Coincidently, the figure was identical to that of 1, the highpoint of prewar Japan. Also, in fiscal 155 the output of mining and manufacturing industries exceeded that of 144, the highest previous total. In fiscal year 155, therefore, the Japanese economy exceeded not only the prewar average but also its peaks.

Industrial Relations and the Union Movement

TABATA HIROKUNI

I. Introduction

It is a truism that Japans labour-management relations are highly cooperative. This cooperation is widely believed to be rooted in particular features such as culture and employment practices such as lifetime employment and enterprise unionism. It is, however, a historical product rather than an intrinsic feature ofJapanese society.

Only since the mid- 170s has Japans harmonious system of industrial relations come to be highly praised. Before the oil crisis of 17, many Japanese regarded the industrialized societies of the West, including their systems of labour-management relations, as models for emulation. Labour leaders generally believed in an adversarial system of labour-management relations, in which labour and management might cooperate but had different interests. The labour movement sought to overcome the defects of enterprise unions by establishing a movement based on industrial unions and socialism (or social democracy); in essence, it strove earnestly to change itself into a Western-style labour movement. The spring wage offensive, or shunto, led by the left-wing labour federation, Sohyo, represented an attempt to conduct Western-style industrial unionism based on an adversarial relationship between labour and capital, whereas Domei, the right-wing labour federation, sought cooperative relations with management.

Despite efforts to promote industrial unionism and other supposedly Western practices, the distinctive features of the Japanese employment system did not disappear. Indeed, they gained new prestige in the early 170s when the OECD published a report praising the three treasures of lifetime employment, seniority wages, and enterprise unions. Moreover, organized labours response to the oil crisis of 17 presented a sharp contrast to the response of unions in the West. In Japan, as concern for the economy deepened, labour came to accept wage restraint and downsizing. The change in the labour movements economic strategy helped strengthen the Japanese economys international competitiveness from the mid-170s, gaining favourable attention

As you can see from figure 18, at sites 15 and only cars passed. At site 10 only bicycles passed. At the other sites on the graph, most of the vehicles were cars. More than 75% of vehicles were cars at all of the other sites except for site 8, which had 67% cars. At all of the sites that didn’t have 100% cars, lorries passed but in different proportions. Site 1 had 11% lorries, site 8 had %, site 7 had 15%, site 6 had 5% and site 5 had 1% of lorries. Buses were only counted at sites 6 and 5. Bicycles were counted at sites 5 (4%), 6 (5%), 7 (%), 8 (7%) and site 10 where every vehicle was a bicycle. A motorcycle was counted at site 1 and a tractor was counted at site 8.

I think that site 10 only counted bicycles because the road there is very small and narrow so cars prefer to take a different route. The road that the survey was taken on only led to a hiking and outdoor pursuits shop there that would attract cyclists. Only cars were counted at site because there is a road out of Grassington at the top of the road where the survey for site was taken. It was also a very narrow and awkward road to drive a bigger vehicle down. Site 15 was down a small side road between some shops. The road did not lead to anywhere and was probably used by cars that were parking or turning around. Buses and lorries did not use this road because it did not lead to anywhere and would probably not fit down it. Buses were only spotted at sites 5 and 6 because they were situated next to Hebden Road, which is a road that buses use. Buses do not enter the main square of Grassington and if they do, they do not go further than sites 5 and 6 as the roads in Grassington are small and twisty and difficult to drive a bus down. Quite a lot of bicycles were spotted because Grassington is a place that many people visit to go cycling because there are good views and lots of good routes for cyclists. Many families would come for a day out to cycle as well as shop and visit the tourist attractions. Most of the vehicles in Grassington were cars because there is a car park in the centre of the main square and the roads are small and difficult to drive bigger vehicles around in.

My hypothesis was proved correct.

P McHenry

Physics II

Abstract Experiment I

In order to assess how valid it is to assume acceleration is constant an air track with a photogate was used to estimate a large cart?s velocity and acceleration at successive time intervals. Infrared radiation was emitted from the photogate and time intervals were collected as a large picket fence broke the infrared beam as the cart traveled through the photogate. This time data was collected along with the angle of the track and the positions where the infrared beam was broken. From the position and time data, x/t, t, and v were calculated. Then graphing x v. t, x/t v. t, and t v. v, acceleration was found by finding double the slope of the graph of x/t v. t. To assume the validity of constant acceleration we had to compare the actual and calculated values for the cart?s point of release. Then, the cart and the photogate were timed for three hours. This allowed you to find the terminal velocity and acceleration of all three graphs. After finding that you can find the slope for each graph by taking the slope using the formula change in y over change in x. Then taking this number and multiplying it by two. This gives you the slope of the graph. For the other graph just find the slope and dont multiply anything together because it is already the slope. After finding the slope the only other thing that you must find is the value for s. S is the distance of the release point to the tip of the photogate. The photogate just measures the time from when it first gets blocked by the picket fence until the last blockage of the photogate laser.

According to an August 1, 00, online article from the Kansas City Star, gasoline prices in the Midwest have historically been among the lowest in the nation (Everly). However, within the last month, we are now slightly above the national average, which, according to the article “This Week In Petroleum,” rose by 1 cents per gallon between August 18 and August 5, 00 to an average of $1.74 per gallon. Drive around the Kansas City Metropolitan area and one will encounter prices ranging from $1.4 per gallon at the Flying J station in Peculiar, Mo., to $1.7 per gallon at the BP station in Overland Park (“KCGasPrices.com”). So what causes the dramatic fluctuations in gasoline prices?

The dramatic fluctuations in gasoline prices are a result of a highly competitive gasoline market, and according to the Energy Information Administration, the basic costs to produce and deliver gasoline to consumers encompass the cost and availability of crude oil, which is approximately 46% of the price; marketing and distribution costs, 1% of the price; refining costs and profits, 14%; and federal and state taxes, 8% (“A Primer”). Gasoline is shipped from refineries to retail stations by pipelines or trucks, and a number of price markups, which vary from region to region due to the formulations required to produce different grades of gasoline, may be added to the consumer’s price along the way (“Gasoline Price”).

Typically, when retail gasoline prices rise, even when crude oil prices are stable, it’s primarily due to a large, seasonality demand for gasoline. In “Crude Oil and Petroleum Product Prices,” prices fluctuate widely and are based on supply and demand conditions…. Taxes and factors other than the cost of crude oil account for more than half of the price paid by the consumer for a gallon of motor gasoline.” According to “This Week in Petroleum,” the most recent increase has been caused by supply problems that “occurred at the same time the country experienced record demand, forcing many companies to secure additional sources of supply. With inventories already low, there was not enough gasoline available to fully replace lost refinery production and meet increased demand.”

Another factor in the rise of gasoline prices is station competition. The Senate Committee on Government Affairs claimed in April 00, that “many oil companies use zone pricing to charge different prices for gasoline to different station operators in order to confine price competition to the smallest area possible and to maximize their prices and revenues at each retail outlet.” Additionally, for stations owned by major oil companies, it is the oil company that determines the price of the local station, and therefore benefits from higher prices and profit margins.

SOLUTIONS

In an August 8, 00, issue of the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal, the consumer group Foundation for Taxpayer and Consumer Rights suggested “the cheapest and easiest way for taxpayers to create a strategic reserve in order to avoid price spikes is to use existing pump capacity. Rather than drill in the Arctic, let’s clean the pumps of the… higher-octane fuel that is not used.” The group’s report stated that stations offering regular, midgrade, and premium gasoline resulted in “under-utilization of existing storage tanks, many of which sit partially filled with slower selling high octane gasolines (“Consumers”). The group further maintains that a single-grade program could eliminate or reduce the price by as much as 0-cents per gallon. This solution meets our panel’s criteria, since current gasoline grades must already meet environmental standards, taxes imposed remain the same, therefore shouldn’t hinder a state’s economy, and no changes would be needed in current vehicles.

However, another solution may be using alternative fuels, such as ethanol. The Federal Trade Commission claims that reformulated, cleaner gasoline and alternative fuels “produce fewer tail pipe pollutants than conventional gasoline and diesel fuel. Using them could improve our air quality” (Consider”). Currently, ethanol, a liquid produced from grain or agricultural waste, usually is sold as a blend of 85 percent denatured ethanol and 15 percent gasoline. “Ethanol can be produced from cellulose feedstocks, or raw materials, such as corn stalks, rice straw, sugar cane, pulpwood, switchgrass, and municipal solid waste. Because of the variety of feedstocks that can be used, ethanol offers tremendous opportunities for new jobs and economic growth” (“Ethanol Market”). Aside from reducing the level of vehicle emissions, domestically produced alternative fuels could help reduce the trade deficit, create jobs, and promote economic activity (“Consider”).

According to the American Coalition for Ethanol, “since the petroleum refining industry is running at near capacity, the ethanol industry helps extend our petroleum supply, thereby helping moderate fuel costs to consumers,” and since ethanol is a high-octane blending component used by many gasoline marketers…”it helps to keep this important class of trade viable and creates competition for the major oil companies,” (Ethanol Information”) thus allowing fuel prices to fall. Alternative fuels meet at least of the panel’s criteria it is obviously safe for the environment, and it appears to actually boost a state’s economy by creating jobs, and according to the American Coalition for Ethanol, “the economic activity attributable to the ethanol industry will generate $.5 billion in additional income tax revenue over the next five years” (“Ethanol Information). However, currently, not all vehicles are capable of running 85-percent ethanol blends. In the event car manufacturers side with the ethanol industry and build all future vehicles with the capabilities of running on ethanol, this alternative fuel choice will be the best solution to the problem of rising area fuel prices.

Assisted Suicide

The term Euthanasia is derived from a Greek word meaning “easy or good death.” Euthanasia has come to convey the act or procedure of taking the life of a person who is hopelessly ill. The reasons for doing such a thing is because of mercy. (Wennberg, 18, p. ).

Oregon was the first state to approve physician-assisted suicide. More than 70 Oregonians have ended their lives with a doctor’s help since voters passed the Death with Dignity Act in 14. Before the Death with Dignity Act became a law, Oregon doctors who helped patients commit suicide risked losing their medical licenses. Doctors faced the possibility of felony criminal charges and prison sentences of 0 years to life. The issue of physician-assisted suicide divided the group’s members of the Oregon Medical Association, which represents thousands of the state’s doctors who remained neutral in 14. In one year of 0,000 people in Oregon who died only 7 went through with assisted suicide by taking a doctor approved overdose. (Lockwood, 001, p. ).

Physician assisted suicide typically takes a half-hour to take affect. The law does not mandate what medication should be given, but in almost every case, the patient has been prescribed a massive dose of Seconal. The medicine overwhelms the patient’s liver and floods into the bloodstream. The heart speeds up, the breathing slows, and the brain shuts off. It takes minutes after that and the patient is unconscious.

The Death with Dignity Act requires that all patients must clear several hurdles before they qualify to receive a lethal prescription. All patients must be 18 years of age. The request must come voluntarily from a mentally competent, terminally ill, adult resident of Oregon. Two physicians must examine the patient to confirm the diagnosis and prognosis. A mental health professional must be consulted if either doctor has a question about mental competence or depression. All other alternatives must be presented and explained to the patient. The patient must make witnessed requests orally and in writing. After a 15-day waiting period, the patient receives a physicians prescription for a lethal dose of medication, which can be filled following a two-day waiting period. All prescriptions under the Death with Dignity law must be reported to the state health department. The patient is then free to take the medication when and if he or she wishes. Family, friends, and a doctor may be present.

Terminally ill, dying, and debilitated people for 400 years have been assured that doctors operate under an oath to heal them, not kill them. The Hippocratic oath under legalized euthanasia is having a major change of direction and patient trust in doctors is seriously eroding. Society is starting to react rashly to the thought of ending people’s lives. Instead people are starting to believe that doctors aren’t taking the time and effort to offer truly compassionate care. (Tada,1, p.75)

Standard medical care is becoming seriously weakened. Elderly and severely disabled patients are not receiving the same quality of care as everyone else. Legalized euthanasia is resulting in less care for the dying. The reason is because medical community shifts are centering the focus on to cure and rehabilitation rather than to care. It all comes down to economics. Legalized euthanasia is extraordinarily cheap compared to the costs of keeping a dying patient alive. Also, it’s becoming easier for families not to deal with the burden of bankruptcy. (Tada, 1, p. 76)

In some cases people believe that death should be left to God. When someone is born on this earth we do not leave birth to God. We space births for our right timing, we prevent births, and we arrange births. People that are against Euthanasia believe that man should learn to become the lord of death and as well as the master of birth.

There are two types of Euthanasia, passive and active. Active Euthanasia is exactly the same as mercy killing because it involves taking direct action to end a life. Passive Euthanasia is allowing the patient to die when the patient could be kept alive by the appropriate medical procedures. Active and Passive Euthanasia are both very terrible. Passive Euthanasia would be withholding of foods, which shortens the life and causes additional suffering. Some of the effects of withholding food and fluids are nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, shortness of breath, the mouth, nose, throat, and genitals dry out, constipation, emotional disorders, and confusion. The patient can usually survive for about 40 days without food. An obese person can survive longer, as the fat cells will gradually break down. The symptoms of this method are horrific and that is one of the reasons the physician will take additional steps to protect the family from seeing the person in pain by giving drugs to prevent the patient’s body from going into convulsions.

One of the reasons why people think Euthanasia should be legalized is because patients should be allowed to control their own deaths. Why should a patient be forced to live if they think that their present standard of life has degenerated to a point of meaningless nothing? At this point, if the person is of sound mind they should have the choice of continuing on or to die peacefully. I believe that the doctor and family should be allowed to make the decision if assisted suicide should happen if the patient is in a vegetable state. In any case the doctor should be at least an advisor because the doctor is the one with the most medical knowledge and he or she should be able to give caring advice and alternatives.

Most people that want to die because of a psychological disorder are just challenging people to see if anyone really cares. People that are clinically depressed and believe that assisted suicide is the right answer are wrong. Depression can be treated with medication along with psychological disorders. Depression is an unjustifiable and irrational reason to commit suicide. The difficult situations and circumstances of life at the moment with depression seem everlasting, but they often resolve themselves over time. If society creates the right of assisted suicide to be legal with people that are mentally retarded people or with people that are old and just want to die then, they will be killed for just those basic reasons. If for those reasons it is allowed then assisted suicide will go out of control. Some minor pain is controllable because modern medicine has the ability to be able to alleviate pain. A person seeking to end their life to avoid all possible pain does not need legalized suicide to do the job, but a better trained doctor in making the pain go away.

The Judicial Council of the American Medical Association has taken the position that supporting comatose patients often constitutes a prolongation of death rather than life. It believes that discretion should remain in the hands of the doctor. It opposes the belief of legally binding policies, which may be too inflexible and arbitrary to suit the unending variety of individual circumstances. Our legal system still views active euthanasia as suicide, a serious violation of the law. Rarely is suicide committed in haste. The reasons for suicide are innumerable, but a consensus seems to exist in regard to the difference between rational and justified suicide. (Bernards, 18, p. )

A living will allows patients to make decisions regarding heroic medical measures, if they should suffer horrible illness or injury. A living will should control the outcome legally if the patient isn’t able to. Unfortunately, not all states recognize living wills, and living wills have not always provided adequate protection for physicians who obey their instructions. In January 184, California State allowed every adult in the state to execute a Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care. It is a four-page document that grants anyone willing to act as “attorney-in-fact.” That person has the right to make decisions about continuing or ending life-support measures when death is near and when the patient isn’t able to decide for himself. The signer of the document may fill it out before or after becoming ill, and he may state how much or little intensive care he or she desires. The appointed attorney is legally bound to obey the signer’s instructions precisely, and so are doctors and hospitals. No lawyers are needed. This important document should bring some clarity to a difficult area, and the American Medical Association is urging adoption of similar laws in all states. (Bernards,18, p. 1).

Medicare costs are rising at an extraordinary pace, by an increasing number of the elderly. The fastest growing age group in the Unites States is comprised of those over age 85, increasing at a rate of about 10 percent every two years. By the year 040 it has been planned that the elderly will represent 1 percent of the population and use 45 percent of all health care expenditures. (Bernards, 18, p.10).

In some cases, like terminal illness, death is often better then dying because the way the person will die. They may have to go through a long period of pain and suffering. Ask yourself, which would you choose, early or prolonged death? If you choose prolonged death you are more likely to be in pain longer trying to fight a disease. Even if you do not think that you would end your life or another’s life should your personal views decide that it is not the right thing for another to do. Does any person have the right to control the choices of others?

The advances of technology have disturbed the natural balance of life and death. No longer does a person die when they are supposed to because life support will prevent that. People who do not agree with assisted suicide say that doctors should not play God by killing patients, but do they realize that by prolonging death that patient is not living a real life? We live in America where we have the freedom to choose what we want to do with our lives. In my life I have seen several of my family members that I love suffer until they decided that was enough. I would rather see someone die peacefully then lay in a hospital bed in pain.
