Introduction

The last half century has brought about many changes. Technology has advanced, as well as techniques for achieving what we want. This has been a major success in the eyes of the advertising industry. With the help of researchers and psychologists, they are able to target an audience and suck them into what they are trying to sell. One particular target market that has exploded is the children’s advertising industry. From 1 to 16 alone, advertising in kid-specific media grew more than 50%, to 1.5 billion (Linnett 000). What implications does this have on children? The purpose of this study is to see how children’s advertising impacts popular culture. The main research questions to be addressed are (1)How much advertising is presented during children’s television programming? And ()What types of products are advertised?

Literature Review

Children have long since been a topic of controversy. How should they be raised? What schools should they attend? What types of educational toys should they play with? With America’s constant struggle for perfection, it is amazing that people haven’t picked up on the exploitation of children through marketing and advertising. Experts, such as Alvin Poussaint, say that advertising agencies are corrupting the youth of America by encoding in their minds that they must have the newest, latest, trend.

According to research conducted in the United Kingdom by Blades and Gunther (00), children do not understand the concept of an advertisement’s intent to sell. Blades and Gunther also maintain that children do not understand the use of bright colors, familiar product endorsers, and catchy jingles. In this particular study, they gathered 6 children and divided them into age groups. They then played a segment of Rugrats and inserted two commercials for “Action Man” and “Pound Puppies”, the kids were later asked to recall brand names and identify products. The kids were also asked a series of questions about advertising, one of which was, what is the purpose of advertising? Children answered, “to give us a potty break”, “to tell us about new things”, and “to tell us what we need.”Is it fair to subject children to advertising that they do not understand? Or even worse, is it okay to use the aide of clinical psychologists to manipulate the minds of the youth?

Alvin Poussaint (000), a child psychologist at Harvard Medical School, has somewhat lead the crusade against using child psychologists to aide in advertising research. Large corporations such as Griffin Bacal, Leo Burnett USA, Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide, and Walt Disney Co. are using psychologists, both clinicians and researchers, to “help better understand their clients.”Poussaint, as well as many other prominent figures, joined together to form the group, Stop Commercial Exploitation of Children (SCEC). The group has successfully put an end to the Golden Marble Awards, a ceremony that praises the most lucrative children’s advertisements of the year. The advertising of Kraft Foods in schools has also been put to an end by a request from the SCEC claiming that this promotes obesity among children. The group has put together a quarterly newsletter dealing with issues related to children’s adverting, such as obesity and loyalty to family not brands. The SCEC is also against “cross-promoting”that ties sales of junk food and junk toys in popular children’s entertainment- movies like Shrek and Spy Kids, along with outlets like Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.

Susan Linn (00a), a Doctor of Education and director of the Judge Baker Children’s Center is also a member of SCEC. She has made congressional briefings and written several articles that criticize children’s advertising. Her briefing emphasized the commercialization of childhood. According to Linn, the average child in the United States spends more time in front of a screen than they spend doing anything other than sleeping. She is also very harsh on product tie-ins. When Rugrats and Sponge-Bob SquarePants are the number one selling types of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, we should be worried, Linn claims. Last year, nine of the ten best selling toys were media linked. Toy companies are partnering with food companies to create what Linn calls “advertoys” such as Barbie’s Fun Time McDonald’s and Hot Wheel’s miniature trucks and cars featuring M&Ms. She also points out that as children reach adolescence they become particularly vulnerable to word-of-mouth or “viral” advertising. They spread the word about what is cool, and if you don’t have it, you aren’t.

In her essay, “Sellouts”(000), Linn points out many scary facts about children’s advertising. According to her, corporations spend over 1 million dollars a year to bombard children with ads. American children ages four to twelve spent over $8 billion of their own money in 1 and influenced $500 billion of their parent’s purchases. Linn also comes down harshly on advertising in schools. She criticized grade schools in Connecticut for accepting $5,000 from a company in exchange for permission to interview ten to twelve year olds in classrooms after school. She also points out the very good point that the United States regulates advertising to children less than most other industrialized nations and that it is time for us to catch up.

Hayes, (1) in an article written in the New York Times, campaigns against the American Psychological Associations participation in research used to aide advertisers. He gathered over sixty signatures of prominent figures and sent a petition to the APA. The APA’s spokeswoman claimed that this was the first time this issue had been brought to their attention from an outside source and that they were planning on addressing the topic of much controversy in their March meeting.

Tom Socha, (17) advocates a commercial free classroom. He puts down Channel One, an “educational” channel broadcast in public schools. Channel One mercilessly advertises Nike, Kraft, Cinnaburst, and Pringles. Socha claims that unless we create more “ad-free” zones, the marketers of today will have an easy time harvesting the minds of our youth.

Purpose and Research Questions

For my original research, I will be monitoring television commercials aimed at children to see what types of products are advertised and how they relate to problems among children. For instance, is the obesity epidemic directly related to the marketing of snack foods? The research questions that will be directly dealt with are (1) How much advertising is presented during children’s television programming? And () What types of products are promoted to children?

Methodology

A content analysis was conducted in order to obtain the basic information needed to answer the research questions. In order to assure objectivity and reliability of the research, this study followed the outline of chapter six in our research book.

A convenience sample of 8 hours of children’s television programming was videotaped in Owensboro, Kentucky, during a given Saturday morning in early November, 00. The use of Saturday morning television was a viable sample because children are out of school and there is a plethora of children’s programming on-air.

The definition of what constitutes children’s programming was provided by The Messinger-Inquirer’s program listings, which also determined the time-slot and the choice of channels used in this research. After verifying the time slot that had children’s programs scheduled the most, (7a.m. to 11a.m.), the networks were narrowed down to Nickelodeon and ToonDisney. The sample therefore consisted of two videotapes, each four hours in length.

Each ad was coded for the following major product categories non-computer or non-video-game related toys, computer or video-game related toys, cereals and breakfast food, snacks and drinks, fast food, and healthy food and drinks. All advertisements that announced other television programs, tied-in promotions or giveaways related to the channel, announced public or community service, and promoted movies were excluded from the research. Each tape was reviewed twice by one coder and the results were compared.

Statistical tests were performed in order to analyze the data collected. Percentages were calculated in order to effectively answer the research questions.

Results and Discussion

A total of 161 ads were coded, 76 from ToonDisney and 85 from Nickelodeon. Each videotape was reviewed twice and the results were compared to estimate the unicoder(?) reliability.

In answering the question of () What types of products are advertised to children?, toys were the main answer. Toys represented the great majority of products advertised (6.7% of the total ads). Non-video-game related toys represented 4% of all product categories aimed at children. Computer and video-game related toys were at a high (6.7%). Nickelodeon presented a higher percentage of toy ads than ToonDisney, 7% to 4%, respectively. Other major product categories advertised were cereal and breakfast foods (14%), snack foods and drinks (7.5%), healthy foods (%), and fast food (5.8%).

With all of the talk about the obesity epidemic, one would expect a higher percentage of the ads to concern food and beverages. Also, one would expect a larger market for educational toys. The truth is, most of the advertisements were for silly dolls and action figures. Sure, while many of these items help to enrich a child’s sense of play, what about enriching their minds? Advertising agencies claim that commercials aimed at children are providing products that kids truly need for development (Linnett, 000). Some may argue with that statement and question how “Flava Dolls” promote cognitive development.

Suggestions for Further Research

This research study, if given more time, money, and well…researchers, could have provided the intrinsic meaning of children’s advertising and why children relate to it the way that they do. However, this brief sampling of commercials aimed at kids has just pointed out the major areas in which advertisers try to target their audience. The results could have been more accurate if there was more than one coder for the commercials. Also, reliability would have been more precise if the sample came from various times of the year and more than just two major networks. The Christmas season is approaching and of course the airways are going to be bombarded with ads for toys that every tot must have. The fact that the advertisements were from morning cartoons probably explains the high instance of breakfast cereals and foods.

In conclusion, children’s marketing and advertising have recently become a major focus of parents, psychologists, and of course advertisers themselves. The industry will continue to grow until someone makes it their problem and solves it.

Coercive Acts of 1774

- Boston Port Bill (June 1 1774)

The Boston Port was closed until East Indian Company paid for the damages of the tea party and the Parliament paid the tax due on the tea.

- The Administration of Justice Act (May 0 1774)

livepaperhelp.com

British soldiers could not be tried for any crimes that they might commit in provincial courts. They would be extradited back to Britain and tried there. Americans called this the murder act because the offenders had little chance of being given a fair trial in America, but little chance of justice being met in Britain either.

- Quartering Act (March 4 1765)

This law required that colonial authorities furnish barracks and supplies to British troops. In 1776, the law expanded to every public house and unoccupied building had to house these British soldiers, and soon on June nd the law covered the quartering of men in private homes and the colonials citizens were required to house and feed the British officers and troops there.

- Massachusetts Government Act (May 0 1774)

This law annulled the charter of the colonies giving the British governor complete control over town meetings and taking control out of the hands of the colonists. The members of the Massachusetts Council would be appointed by Governor, not elected by the Assembly. The Governor in fact, appointed all the officials, juries and sheriffs. This allowed the governor to appoint members of the upper house of the state legislature.

Quebec Act (May 0 1774)

· - The Quebec Act was shaped by the ideas of the government, law officers, Canadians, and independent advisors. This law revoked the proclamation against westward expansion in Canada. It also amended the Quebec boundaries. This border now stretched southwards along the Ohio River behind the Allegheny Mountains. The Quebec Act also gave freedom to worship to Roman Catholics and allowed priests to collect and allowed the priests to collect tithes from their parishioners.

Effects

These events helped the colonies bond together. They joined together in boycotting British goods and prepared colonists for war with Britain and helped them declare independence. The Colonies united and responded quickly from a call from Virginia for a Continental Congress that met in Philadelphia in September of 1774.

Have you ever heard the urban legend about the girl in Detroit who, while walking, was run over on a lonely deserted street? The driver thought he had just hit a speed bump and kept driving, not knowing it was a teenage girl and he was dragging her along the highway, actually dragging the life out of her. Legend has it that if you drive over that stretch of road where she was killed, you can hear her frantic, panicked knocking on the outside of your car. As firm believers in the story, teenagers have been known to spend endless Saturday nights roaming along the streets of Detroit hoping to find that street and to hear that desperate knocking. Luckily, for me, I had not heard that story when this summer, my friend Christine and I, experienced an urban legend of our own.

It was a typical hot, humid, dull Houston evening. I had finally gotten my license two weeks earlier and was quite inexperienced with driving at night. Feeling the freedom of being able to get into the car and go whenever I wanted was amazing and Christine and I decided to celebrate my license with a trip to the movies. The car trip to the movie theater was mundane and uneventful. When we arrived at the theater we piled out of the car and went into the movie theater for Freaky Friday.

After the movie was over we ambled back to the car knowing that the quicker we got into the car and drove home, the quicker we would walk into her house and be engulfed with boredom. We got into my 15 BMW station wagon, my parent’s car and not my choice. The car is low to the ground with a backseat and an open space behind it to be used as a trunk. When you open the door, the interior light does not light.

We drove out of the parking lot still laughing about the movie. Being the horrible navigator that I am, I called my mom to make sure that I was heading the right way in order to get back to Christine’s house. After getting my mother’s directions, I drove onto the on-ramp for 4. We talked for about 10 minutes, then realizing that neither of us are interesting people; we decided to listen to the radio. Christine switched on 104KRBE and her favorite song “ Where is the Love” was on. I turned the music up really loud and we started to dance in our seats. Christine, caring more than me what other people think of us, turned down the radio when she noticed other cars glaring at me flopping my head back and forth attempting to dance. I was laughing at her insecurities as she scowled at me, when suddenly we heard it. A violent taping was coming from behind us as if someone was knocking on the car. Forgetting all of my drivers ed training, and you know, basic common sense, I slammed on my brakes. It wasn’t my fault; my automatic response was to get out of my car as fast as I could. Quickly, glancing around, and noticing that I’m stopped in the middle of 4, I pressed my foot down hard on the gas pedal. It had now been about 0 seconds since the knocking. There were thousands of things flashing through my mind. Was someone in the car? Was someone on top of the car? Was I about to get violently murdered while driving, like I had seen so many times in scary movies? After attempting to sort through my thoughts I remembered that I was not the only one in the car and I turned my attention to Christine. I would love to be able to say that I turned to her and she was laughing hysterically about playing a joke on me by knocking on the car, but she wasn’t. She was in a worse state than I was. It seemed that she had retreated into herself. Her face was buried in her hands and the little face that her shaking hands didn’t cover was bright red. “Are you okay Christine?” No answer. “Christine, talk to me!” She looked at me and with almost a whisper said, “ No, then he will hear me.” Not expecting this answer and being the truly caring friend that I am, I burst out laughing. “You tricked me,” I said, “ for a minute there I actually thought you weren’t the one who was knocking and you were actually scared.” She turned to me with a pale look of horror on her face, straight from a scary movie, and said, “ It wasn’t me”. Always being able to tell when she was lying, and knowing now that she was not, I started to get more nervous. I attempted to keep up my cool and confident front and calmly said, “Anyone who is in the back of my car, I would like to know what you want and who you are.” At least that’s what I rehearsed in my head, what actually came out sounded a little more like, “anwhoisbackseacawhoru”. Christine looked at me and asked what I just said and I replied that I didn’t know.

live paper help

At that point we heard a quicker louder taping. I looked over at Christine who was visibly freaking out now. She started frantically yelling, “ Whoever is back there, you are a mean person and you suck.” I glared at her with disbelieving eyes. “First of all Christine,” I said tensely, “ there is no one back there, and second of all, what are you doing telling the KILLER that he sucks.” There was silence in the car for 0 seconds, which was worse than noise. I finally asked Christine to turn around and check behind the backseat to see if anyone was back there. She stared blankly at me, as if to tell me that that was the stupidest question anyone had ever asked her. “Are you crazy? I’m not turning around,” she screamed at me. I quietly informed her that I couldn’t possibly do it because I was driving. She hysterically replied, “ I don’t care because you suck.” Now I know this doesn’t make much sense now, but to two girls in a state of panic it made sense at the time. I wanted Christine to call my mom to see what she said about this whole situation, but clearly that wasn’t going to happen any time soon. So we just continued on driving. I switched on the radio and “Fighter” by Christina Aguilera blared through the speakers. Christine and I started to sing really loudly as if we were showing our intruder that we weren’t scared of him.

We drove into her driveway and Christine bolted out of the car and left me. I cried out for her not to leave me but she ran to her door ignoring my pleas. I slammed my car into park and was 10 steps behind her. But abandoning me did her no good, because when she got to her front door she found it locked. I laughed at her misfortune but my amusement was cut short when I realized that we were still outside with our potential killer. We went around to her parent’s bedroom door and pounded on it like our lives depended on it. It seemed like they did! Her mom opened the door and asked us what was wrong. We told her about the taping and she looked at us and told us we were stupid. I looked at her and told her that that wasn’t the exact comfort we were looking for. She said I was 16 and I needed to calm down. I told her I would if she would come back out

Time ManagementI want to be a nurse

I want to be a nurse because every since I was young I always had the potential to be a caregiver. My heart always goes out to people who are less fortunate and people who need a little extra help. Sometimes I wish the people who are willing to help others should not need a degree but I see that is not possible. I want to be a nurse because there is a shortage of nurses in the field. I hope that I can make a positive effect on others so that they would be influenced t join the nursing field. Someday wish that I can own my own health care facility or even a hospital. Becoming a nurse will also help me accomplish my financial goals and someday be rich. I will also like to be known as the best nurse that ever lived.

These are some of my barriers, my barriers are sleeping excessively, being on the phone and smoking cigarettes. I have other barriers such as being organized, procrastination is a big problem because I am lazy and puts things off until the last minute, and also forgetfulness.

Usually I am not a poem reader but, when I picked up this book of poems called “Elisabeth and Other Poems” by Professor Leonard A. Slade, I could not put it down. The poems were so real and vivid, the story just jumped out at you. One main reason why I am not much of a poem reader is because they are not easy to follow and hard to read, the poems in “Elisabeth and other Poems” were very easy to read and understand. I felt that I can relate to some of the poems also witch made me want to keep reading also. The poems about family and being a black man I could relate to first hand. The poem “Black and Beautiful is one of my favorites. How it depicts the life and thoughts of a black man is very real. “Feet tired and hurting, Heart heavy and hungry, Attacked because I’m African, Rejected because I’m Black, Despised because I’m proud. But I smile. I am Black. I am beautiful”. This poem I can relate to, growing up in upstate New York where racism is strong I feel like that poem was written for me, the poem expresses my life and how I feel. The poem “Acquaintances” I can relate to and is very real to me also. To me this poem is about two people who meet and began to like each other. As they talk and want to take their relationship to another level they realize that it will be hard because he is a black man and she is a white woman. I can relate to this poem because I know what it’s like first hand to be in an inter-racial relationship and to deal with the problems that come along with it. Another one of my favorite poems is “Fear”. When I first read this poem is just sat and thought about it for a while, then read it over and over again. It’s amazing how 1 short lines can tell just a powerful, vivid story that’s so real. Everybody who has had a friend can feel this poem, how your parents tell you to trust god (well I know mine do), and how other thing you may be afraid of but nothing is worst then being stabbed in the back by your best friend. All the poems in this book are great stories and everyone can relate to an aspect in most of them. I would recommend this book of poems to everyone; even if you are not a poem reader (like me) you will find yourself not putting this book down until you are done.

In Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie and William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, we see how Family history greatly affects both the characters of Hamlet and Tom Wingfield.

Tennessee Williams wrote the glass menagerie in 141. The Glass Menagerie can be categorized as a “Memory Play” which means that most of the play is narrated from the narrators memory.

The play is set in St Louis in 17. During this time while Williams was writing the play the economy was going through a recession. This affects the play in that while everyone else’s life and surroundings were changing the home of the Wingfield remains the same. Amanda Wingfield who is the mother of the household is not happy with her daughter Laura. Laura has a physical defect and wears a brace on her leg. Her mother is not happy with her due to the fact that she is really shy and does not attract men or as Amanda refers to them as “Gentlemen Callers”. In an attempt to fulfill the preconceived path that most parents have for their children Amanda enrolls Laura in a business college. Amanda finds out that Laura has not been going to her class she spends her days wondering around the city. Amanda feels that her only hope of having Laura fulfill the path that she has dreamed for her is by getting married. Amanda and her son Tom discuss how they can help Laura’s future.

Tom has selected Jim O’Connor a casual friend that he works with down at the factory to come over and have dinner with laura in hopes that the plans for her mother and the future that laura deserves will all be supplied by Jim. Laura gets word of the plans and connects the name Jim o’connor to the guy that she had a huge crush on in high school. When Jim arrives Laura answers the door and the retreats back to her room. While alone Tom tells Jim that he has used the money that was intended for the family electric bill to pay for membership in the merchant marines and that he plans to leave his family to pursue his own dreams. The family and guest sit down for dinner and midway through the meal the lights go out, they all light candles and Amanda encourages Jim to entertain Laura in the living room. While they talk they both reminisce of their high school times. They both recall the nickname that Jim gave her in High school of “Blue Roses which is actually a accidental pronunciation of her actual condition.

livepaperhelp.com

Throughout the talk Jim eventually lectures Laura about having low self esteem and letting a physical defect affect her life. Laura after warmed up to Jim shows him her “glass menagerie of animals. While dancing with Laura Jim accidently knocks over one of these glass animals breaking a piece of it off. Laura surprisingly forgives him and being caught within the moment Jim kisses laura. After realizing what he has done Jim tells Laura that he is actually engaged, laura in a nonresistant state offers Jim the broken glass figure as a memory of the night that they both have experienced. Jim leaves the house explaining to Amanda that he has to meet his fianc. Amanda after finding out that Jim is engaged turns on Tom for not finding out this information before, and acuses him of being selfish. The play ends by Tom telling us that he was fired from his Job and left Amanda and laura behind. Tom tells us that something that he can’t leave behind is the guilty memory he has of his sister Laura.

My initial reaction to this play was a feeling of depression. The whole life and visual image of the play is a gloomy and sympathetic in my mind. Amanda’s constant nagging of her daughter Laura only makes her resign to her glass menagerie even more. Tom plays a double role in this play both as a character and a narrator. Tom is the only character in the play to actually break the fourth wall. The fourth wall is an imaginary wall between the actors and audience. Most of the time in plays the fourth wall is not meant to be broken, however in The Glass Menagerie this does not apply. Tom addresses the audience to give a different approach to explaining the play. He is detached from the stage action at some points and then is very much involved ion whats going on at another time.

Amanda can be seen as the tpical souther belle, but in this case she is a southern belle affected by a turn in her intended path. A result of this is that she still acts in her proper mannerisms and for that the time period are out of date and appear comical. Amanda is overlooked in my opinion a lot of critics view her as being a nag and I don’t see that as being necessarily true. In my opinion Amanda sacrifices a lot for the well being of her children. Someone of her stature would never be caught selling magazine subscriptions but she results to this state in order to heighten the possibility of Laura’s marriage proposals. We can say that Amanda should not be conceived as evil but as one having flaws. Amanda who just like her children occasionally goes into a fantasy world, but her children can admit that and Amanda cannot. Within the play most of the text we hear Amanda saying shows her character flaws but can be viewed as some of the best moments of the play in my opinion.

Hamlet Written by William Shakespeare can be conceived as one of the most prominent pieces of tragic literature. Hamlet was written By Shakespear in the estimated time frame of 1600-1601, which is the beginning of the seventeenth century.

Hamlet begins with the sighting of a ghost that roams around the castle of elsinore. The Watchman spot the ghost and they claim that the ghost resembles the dead King Hamlet. It is then brought to the attention of prince Hamlet. When Hamlet goes to inspect the sightings of the ghost, the ghost speaks to him. The apparition tells Hamlet that he is indeed the spirit of his dead father and that Hamlet’s uncle Claudius murdered him. The ghost orders Hamlet to seek revenge upon his uncle.

Hamlet devotes himself to avenging his father’s death. His Mother Gertrude and Claudius notice a change in Hamlets behavior and ask his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to watch him. When Polonius the father of Hamlet’s love interest Ophelia learns of the possibility that hamlet is mad he ask Claudius to spy on Hamlet when he is with her. Claudius does spy on Hamlet and confirms that he is mad but is also taken back by the suggestion form Hamlet to Ophelia that she should join a nunnery.

A group of traveling actors comes to elsinore and Hamlet sees this as an opportunity to test his uncle by having the actors perform a scene that is exactly like the way Claudius killed his father, if Claudius is guilty he will react to the scene in a certain way. Claudius does react by getting up and leaving the room. Hamlet sees his reaction and follows him with the intent to kill him. When Hamlet comes upon Claudius he is praying and hamlet decides that if he killed him during his praying that Claudius’s soul would go to heaven.

Hamlet after deciding not to kill Claudius goes to confront his mother. From behind a curtain in his mom’s room he hears a noise and thinks it’s Claudius draws his sword and stabs into the curtain killing, not Claudius but Polonius. For his crime Hamlet is sent to England accompanied by his friends Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. What Hamlet does not know is that Claudius has given his friends sealed orders that when Hamlet arrives to England he should be put to death.

Ophelia who is greatly affected by her father’s death goes crazy and drowns herself in a river. Laertes who is Polonius’s son and Ophelia’s brother returns to his home only to find out that his father and sister are dead and Hamlet is being given the blame. After a pirate attack on Hamlets ship he returns to his home to continue his quest to avenge his fathers death. Once Claudius receives word that Hamlet has returned he devises a plan to kill Hamlet. Claudius sets it up so that Hamlet and Laertes will fence each other in a match and he will poison Laertes blade so when hamlet is struck he will die. Being that his former plan for Hamlets death did not come true Cladius has a backup plan. He poisons a goblet of wine in which he will get Hamlet to drink when he wins or scores a point.

The fencing match begins and Hamlet scores the first point, Claudius offers Hamlet a drink from the tainted cup as a reward for his point, hamlet declines and accidentally his mother drinks from the goblet dying from the poison. Laertes strikes Hamlet with his sword but hamlet does not die immediately. Laertes who after being sliced by his own sword tells hamlet that Claudius is responsible for his mother’s death, he does this then dies. Hamlet then stabs Claudius and forces him to drink the rest of the poisoned wine, Claudius dies as well as Hamlet.

My reaction to this play can be summed up in the word “wow”. Never have I read such a tragic and gloomy play. Hamlet is what I want to call a mystery. No matter how many times I or any reader may read Hamlet we will still come away with unanswered questions. Hamlet becomes obsessed with avenging his father’s deathn any other character face with the evidence that proves his uncles is guilty would stop, but hamlet finds the need to look further until he definitely approves his uncles guilt.

Claudius can be viewed as the antagonist of the play. Which basically means that he is the bad guy of the play. Claudius’s motive for killing King Hamlet is unclear to me. The only reasoning I can come up with is that he wanted the throne from King Hamlet. My next observation of Claudius is his love for Queen Gertrude. I believe this intended love to be false. Claudius only married queen Gertrude in order to ensure that Hamlet did not obtain the throne. We see that Claudius only cares for himself and Gertrude when she tells him of Polonius’s death, he does not comment on her well being but remarks on the fact that he would be in danger if he had been in the room.
