I believe that the desire to shop or fight comes from the different chemical make-ups of boys and girls. Girls just seem to be able to work their problems out without fighting more than boys. This is because girls are more emotional and sensitive than guys are. At the same time, boys are more aggressive and physical than girls. Some say it is because of the way they are raised. I don't think that is entirely true. Guys have been raised without a father as an influence in their lives, and girls have been raised without a mother as a female influence in their lives. In both cases the kids usually still grow up with the same classic masculine and feminine characteristics.

Some people also argue that the media strongly influences kids to be masculine if you are male and feminine if you are female. Pushing action figures on boys and dolls on girls does this. The toys also have the girls cooking, cleaning and taking care of children (baby dolls). The toys have the boys driving trucks, fighting wars and building buildings. People say this is wrong because it teaches kids the incorrect ideals. But are the toy makers really that far from the truth? Statistically, in the US, women do the majority of the housework, and also take care of the children, while sometimes also working. The man of the house works to provide for his family and is usually in charge of the bills and finances. Of course there are exceptions, but this is what you will usually find. Men are also primarily the people who are involved in physical labor, truck driving and being soldiers. In fact women can't even fight in combat. Boys and girls just like different things, meaning they enjoy a different variety of toys.

They are also not as critical of other male's appearance as women are of other women's appearances. These behaviors I believe are mainly learned in our culture, and not innate.

There are two many factors that show masculinity and femininity are not learned. These include things that cannot be attributed to parenting, such as emotion and aggressiveness. I doubt that parents tell their daughters to be as emotional as girls are. I believe that it is in their chemical makeup to be very emotional and caring, leading them to be the traditional caregivers in a family. I doubt that parents teach their sons to be aggressive and primarily work out their problems through fighting. I believe that boys are just inclined to be very aggressive and physical about working out their problems. Of course just like anything else there are exceptions, but I think that in our society the stereotypes about men and women are usually found to be the truth.

The many different factors that make men masculine and women feminine are not only complex, but also not always constant. We all know there are women who are more masculine as well as men who are more feminine, but for the most part I think the terms used to describe men and women are pretty accurate. Men and women have many different attributes both learned and unlearned that make them masculine and feminine. All of these attributes of learned and unlearned masculinity and femininity work hand in hand to shape both men and women in today's society.
