In Sophocles Oedipus Rex it is portrait that life's outcome is predestined by fate as well as it is influenced by one's character traits and actions.
Oedipus himself believes in the words of the gods, priest and just old wise men as long as it is to his benefit at the beginning of the tragedy. During the events he realizes that many of the prophecies are relevant to his own life. He tries to avoid the truth by putting the blame towards all other directions than his own. Slowly the guilt overtakes his persona and with his character trait of finding the truth at all cost, he admits to his own demise.
All of the characters have their own traits that lead to the behavior displayed by Oedipus since all keep secrets that could have prevented the tragic outcome. Besides his own downfalls his wife and mother dealt a set of cards for his life that made a great difference. Oedipus believes that no one can be so horrifying, but at the end he realizes he is the one. Towards the end after he loses his eyesight to his own hands, the true feelings of the man of all strength come to surface. He is the caring person deep inside when he embraces his daughters and worries about their future sincerely.

After the final scene the men asks for the help of his uncle to help him hide his pain and requests his sympathy. Eventually Oedipus is exiled in Corinth where he repents and finds his peace. Even that man endures the worse pain and shame he raises above all for the better to succeed and to rise to the level of the gods.
The best paragraph that describes the play and person in my opinion is: "Men of Thebes: look upon Oedipus. This is the king who solved the famous riddle and toward up, most powerful of men no mortal eyes but looked on him with envy. Yet in the end ruin swept over him. Let every man in mankind's frailty consider his last day; and let none presume on his good fortune until he find life, at his death, a memory without pain."
Oedipus reflects the true man who gets blinded by his own good fortune and cannot see the despair around him, which is caused to some extent by his doing as well as he inherited fate.
