"Paphnutius"
In Hrotsvitha's "Paphnutius," we begin our story when we are introduced to
Do my essay on Paphnutius CHEAP !
Paphnutius and Thias. Thias is a woman that we can refer to as a harlot. She brings great
dismay into Paphnutius' life. His dismay is brought by the fact that she is exchanging
herself in the return of gifts from young men. Paphnutius is severely bothered by Thias
so he decides to venture to her and try to get her to turn her life around. Thias meets
Paphnutius but does not know she has. He disguised himself as a suitor for her and then
he finally revealed his identity. Thias feels terrible about her past and she repents to
Paphnutius about all the things that she has been doing wrong. Paphnutius explains to
her that she must pay for her sins so he takes her to a nunnery. For Thias' sins, she is
sent to a cell for three years in order to cleanse her fully of her choices from the past.
After three years Paphnutius returns for Thias and she is free to go, but the shocking part
of this story is how Thias, after she has repented she is still doomed. The story cuts to
Thias dying in the presence of Paphnutius. The story doesn't give much indication why,
but it leaves the audience a little unsure of how or why.
In Hrotsvitha's work, she describes a story that relates back to Medieval
Imitation. Thias repented her sins in the hope to find a sense of security in a new life
where she will follow God. Thias goes to the nunnery so willingly in the fact she
believes things will turn themselves around. This play leaves the audience under the
impression that because Thias repented, she will now have everlasting life in the
Kingdom of God. Hrotsvitha seems to want her audience to believe that if you repent,
like Thias, you will have a wonderful life; but, if you don't you will have a long
treacherous life. Hrotsvitha combines theater, theology, and imitation to display the mere
fact that what's done in one's life will result in their afterlife. If someone lives their life
under the shadow's of God they will have a joyous life in heaven, but if not they will live
in the evilness of hell for the rest of their being.
