"None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such" (84), the effect of this is that Emily never marries. The story continues on to describe the father daughter relationship as a tableau, Emily in a white dress standing behind her father who has his back to her clutching a horsewhip (84). This sort of control that Emily's father has over her is not just over protective but isolates her to only forming a relationship with her father. Status of course is not the only problem of this relationship. The major problem is that this relationship with the northerner Homer Baron is one that will not amount to love and marriage. " 'She will persuade him yet,' because Homer himself remarked- he liked men, and it was known that… he was not a marrying man"(85). In Miss Emily's desperation for love and control she kills Homer so that he can never leave her, so that the only man she had a chance to love can be with her forever in death. Emily needed to control Homer so he wouldn't leave her, the way Emily's father needed to control her so she would not leave him.

This style of fathering in "A Rose for Emily" differs greatly compared to Anne Tyler's "Teenage Wasteland." The father in this story had no control over or concern for his child. They allow him to stay out as late as he wants and do not ask any questions. When Matt accompanied his wife to pick up Donny from Cal's house Matt remarked that the place look like a teenage wasteland (464). Instead of taking concern for where his child is spending most of his time, Matt gave a dry laugh. Donny continues to slip without parental control until he is finally expelled from school. Instead of Donny going home he goes to Cal's place. The only place where he has received any kind of adult direction, weather it was negative or positive it was still direction. Donny's mother worried calls Matt, but he is "…out of the office" which seemed only fitting since Matt was "out" for most of Donny's life (464).

Due to lack of control Donny runs away from home and it is assumed never seen again. While Miss Emily's father placed so much control on her that it formed her into a murder. These are extreme examples of worst case scenarios.

If Miss Emily's father had been less selfish and less controlling Emily most likely would have married and had children of her own. If Donny's father had been more involved in Donny's life showing guidance and taking on fatherly responsibility, including disciplining his child, Donny may not have been expelled from school and would not have run away.
