1. The Triple entente Britain, France and Russia (formed in 107).
. The Triple alliance Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy (formed in 188)
• Each member promised to help its allies if they were attacked by a country from the other alliance.
• Britain was concerned about
1. Germany's growing iron and steel industry.
. Germany's growing empire (colonies).
. Germany's growing navy (naval race)
• France wanted revenge on Germany as it had won Alsace and Lorraine (two important French industrial regions) in a previous war.
• Germany was jealous of England's empire and wealth.
• Russia rivalled with Austria-Hungary for more land and influence on the Balkans area.
• Bosnia in Austria-Hungary was occupied by many Serbians. Serbia wanted to make Bosnia a part of the Serbian Empire. However the Austria-Hungarian Empire disagreed. Bosnia had started to fight for independence and Russia was prepared to support.
• People wanted the rest of the world to know that their countries were the strongest and had the most power (nationalism). So people were happy and prepared to go to war.
• Countries fought over their worldwide colonies. However this never caused war.
• The following cause was the spark of the war. This caused Germany to declare war on Russia. Franz Ferdinand (the Archduke of Austria-Hungary) was shot in Bosnia by a teenage terrorist named Gavrilo Princip on the 8th of July 114. He had been plotted against by six teenage terrorists.
Steps to the First World War
• After the death of Franz Ferdinand Russia promises to protect Serbia against any Austrian attacks and begins to prepare its army.
• When Germany hears about the Russian preparations (on 1 August) it declares war on Russia due or the triple alliance.
• Britain mobilises its fleet of warships on August.
• On the rd of August Germany declares war on France. This was because of two reasons;
1. The Schlieffen plan. This plan was developed by field marshal Alfred von Schlieffen. The plan was to attack and capture Paris by going through "neutral" Belgium and racing through the French soldiers. They thought this would take six weeks. The Germans knew that Russian soldiers were spread out all around Russia and were hard to organise in less than six weeks due to the poor transport routes. Thus the German army would attack Russia after they had won war on the western front.
. Germany was expecting an attack from France as it had attacked on of its allies.
• On the 4th of August German soldiers marched into Belgium. Britain declares war on Germany due to an old agreement that both Belgium and Britain would defend one another. Belgium declares war on Germany to defend its ground.
• On the 6th of August Austria declared war on Russia due to the alliance and because it was helping Serbia.
• On the 1th of August France and England declare war on Austria due to the triple entente.
