- Essay by Mathew Greig

In the novel 'All Quiet on the Western Front', a lot of things happened to the generation of men that would change their lives forever.

The men that were in the war became different in a way that changed their beliefs and their opinions. They were also traumatized from what they had to live through, and were criticized for running away from the war. They were also belittled for wanting to stay at home instead of fighting for their country.

World War One changed their lives as well as their beliefs.

When Paul first arrived at the war he had believed what he had always believed until he had seen the horrifying acts of war. This had changed him in a way that nobody could ever imagine. After seeing a friend being killed or even wounded had a huge influence on Paul, Kat and the others. After fighting for his country for so long he was finally rewarded for his hard work and dedication for the mother land.

With a leave to visit his mother and his family, Paul said that the war had changed his whole outlook on life. Paul also began to see the war as his home and his comrades as his family.

Paul's new family, just like his real family, had to make some big sacrifices in order to survive the war. These sacrifices did not involve riches or personal objects, but their beliefs and opinions. The horrors and grotesque images that they had seen, heard and even touched had dramatically changed their strong beliefs and opinions. Paul first sacrificed Kemmerich's friendship and love that was given from his mother.

The soldiers had quite often lost their faith and hope throughout the war due to these horrendous acts of violence.

The First World War traumatized Paul and his friends due to the awful sights they had seen and agonizing cries they had heard.

One of the ways that may have affected Paul's life was seeing his friends Kemmerich, and Meyer get killed as well as Haie Westhus getting shot in the back. These were certainly traumatizing experiences.

Hearing your friends scream with pain, agony, and horror, not to mention the gun shots and explosions could very well rip apart ones insides and drive the soldiers crazy. The horrors and hell that war brought is enough to dramatically affect even the strongest people.

After being at war for so long and seeing all of the horror and chaos that happened may have ruined Paul's life if he had lived. It just wouldn't be possible to live a normal life after being involved with such a horrible event. Also, if he was to return to a normal society he may not be able to live in such a peaceful place after seeing so many people lose their lives. After living through that kind of event , it would most likely traumatize anybody.

When the First World War was happening, people were extremely criticized if they didn't go to war or if they ran away from it. If someone decided not to go to war, he would be ridiculed and criticized the way Kantoreh would have been if he didn't change his mind. Some people may even throw stones or garbage at someone if they were to abandon his colleagues in a time of need.

If someone were to run away from the war, they would be taunted as well as having the chance at being shot or sentenced to life in prison. Detering was criticized for running from his friends and country. When Paul and the others found out, they knew that Detering would probably be shot when he was found, if he was found.

Tjaden was criticized by Corporal Himmlestoss for being the smallest one of the company and also for wetting his bed. People often get criticized or made fun of at war. The worse thing is they would get shot at maybe even killed if they tried to run from it. There are many different reasons why the soldiers would get criticized for some thing that they might not be able to control.
